DPM Barcode Reading for Component Traceability

Direct Part Marking (DPM) places an identification code directly onto a component. The Matrix 220 XAI reads these marks at production checkpoints, allowing a control system to associate each part with its assembly, inspection or manufacturing record.

It is particularly relevant where low contrast, reflective surfaces or inconsistent marking make code capture difficult. Applications include Data Matrix identification on metal components, printed circuit boards and plastic or glass parts. Suitability depends on the actual mark and reading geometry, so representative samples are needed before selecting a model.

DecodeX and Model-Specific DPM Illumination

DecodeX uses AI-based decoding to handle challenging DPM images. Optical setup remains critical: focus, exposure, mounting angle and illumination must make the code distinguishable from its background.

The range offers separate illumination configurations:

  • DPM-R: red illumination with a polariser and diffuser.
  • DPM-B: blue illumination with a polariser and diffuser.
  • DPM-R HP: high-power red illumination with a polariser, intended for demanding dynamic applications.

Red and blue are model choices, rather than two selectable colours in every reader. Polarised light helps control reflections; diffused light spreads illumination across the surface. The appropriate combination should be assessed on the production material, including its finish and curvature.

The reading ranges describe the available operating envelope, not the distance at which every code can be decoded. Code module size—the size of an individual cell or bar—surface finish and required field of view determine the usable distance. Likewise, 45 frames per second describes image capture, not a rated number of successfully decoded parts per second.

Mounting, Focus and Accessories

The aluminium housing and rotating connectors accommodate restricted machine spaces. Allow additional clearance for the mounting bracket, protective cover and cable bends. At the same distance, the 7 mm lens covers a wider area; the 12 mm lens provides a narrower view for concentrating image detail on a smaller region.

Electronic focus supports setup and application changes without manually adjusting a lens. ESD-safe covers for electrostatic-sensitive environments, Anti-YAG filter covers, combined protective covers, brackets and flexible cables are configuration-dependent accessories. Check whether the selected part number already includes an ESD cover before adding one.

Applications and Reading-Station Design

The Matrix 220 XAI supports component identification throughout manufacturing, with different setup priorities for each application:

  • Електроника: PCB and component tracking, where small codes, restricted mounting space and ESD requirements influence selection.
  • Автомобилен reading laser-marked or dot-peened parts after marking and during assembly, including reflective or textured components.
  • Опаковка: primary-packaging identification and product tracking, where exposure time and triggering must accommodate movement and variable code positions.

Примерна конфигурация: at an automotive assembly station, a part-present signal triggers a reading attempt on a laser-marked component. The reader sends the decoded identifier to the PLC, which compares it with the expected part and directs a no-read or mismatch to a defined exception process. Sample evaluation should include acceptable marks, poor marks and the full range of part positions.

If the project also requires creating permanent codes, the Datalogic AREX400 fiber laser marker is a separate marking-system option. Marking and reading require coordinated positioning, triggering and application testing.

PLC Connectivity and DL.CODE Setup

Onboard PROFINET IO, EtherNet/IP and Modbus TCP support communication with industrial controls, while OPC UA provides another route for exchanging data with compatible systems. Ethernet TCP/IP, serial communication and ID-NET reader networking provide additional integration options.

Commissioning should define the trigger source, expected code content, output format, response timing and handling of failed reads. Match the reader configuration to the PLC project and required firmware before installation.

DL.CODE is Windows-based configuration software supporting Ethernet or serial programming. Automatic Setup, the X-PRESS button and local indicators assist initial adjustment; green and red spot feedback and web monitoring help operators inspect reading status. Web monitoring serves a different purpose from DL.CODE configuration.

Matrix 220 XAI DPM or Matrix 220 STD-W?

The Matrix 220 STD-W is a close alternative for printed labels with consistent contrast. Both ranges use 1280 × 960-pixel imaging, electronic focus and 7 mm or 12 mm optics. STD-W models use white illumination, while XAI DPM models combine DecodeX with dedicated red or blue DPM illumination.

Choose XAI DPM when the principal difficulty is the directly marked code or its surface. For straightforward labels, assess a standard стационарен баркод скенер against the same code size, working distance and cycle time. A wider reading area, greater distance or operation outside 0–45°C requires a different configuration or reader assessment.

Конфигурационни въпроси

Can the Matrix 220 XAI run from Power over Ethernet?

The documented XAI DPM models require a 10–30 VDC supply. PoE models exist elsewhere in the Matrix 220 family, so specify the complete part number when replacing an installed reader or designing the power connection.

Does a successful read prove that a mark meets a quality standard?

A successful decode confirms readability in that setup. The reader also provides code-quality metrics, including DPM metrics referencing ISO/IEC 29158. Where a customer requires formal verification or an acceptance grade, specify the measurement standard, illumination geometry, calibration and reporting requirements separately.

Will one setup cover different materials and moving parts?

Different finishes or marking processes may need separate recipes or illumination variants. Test each representative part at the intended speed and orientation. The available exposure time, code size and time spent within the field of view determine whether the production cycle is achievable.

Matrix 220 XAI DPM FAQs

Which applications suit the Datalogic Matrix 220 XAI DPM reader?

The Matrix 220 XAI suits automated component identification where codes are marked directly onto metal, plastic or glass. Applications include PCB tracking, automotive assembly traceability and identification after marking. It reads Data Matrix and other supported barcode formats. Selection should consider the smallest code, poorest acceptable mark and full range of component positions.

When should I choose Matrix 220 XAI instead of Matrix 220 STD-W?

Choose XAI DPM when surface reflections, low contrast or variable direct marks are the main reading challenge. STD-W uses white illumination and is worth assessing for conventional printed labels. If a station handles both labels and direct marks, test both with the proposed configuration. Compare стационарни промишлени баркод скенери against the same code dimensions, working distance and cycle time.

How do DPM-R, DPM-B and DPM-R HP illumination differ?

DPM-R uses red light with a polariser and diffuser; DPM-B uses blue light with the same optical functions. DPM-R HP uses high-power red light with a polariser for demanding dynamic applications. These are separate model configurations. Choose using the contrast achieved on actual parts, including reflective, curved or textured surfaces, rather than material name alone.

Should I choose the 7 mm or 12 mm lens, and what reading distance is possible?

The 7 mm lens covers a wider area at the same distance; the 12 mm lens concentrates image detail within a narrower view. Published ranges are 40–300 mm for DPM-R and DPM-B, extending to 400 mm for DPM-R HP with the 7 mm lens. Usable distance depends on code module size—the smallest cell or bar—and positioning variation. Electronic focus does not change lens coverage.

Can DecodeX read damaged or low-contrast Data Matrix codes?

DecodeX is designed to improve decoding of difficult DPM codes, including marks with variable or compromised quality. Its benefit still depends on capturing sufficient code detail: glare, blur or extensive damage can make a mark unreadable. Evaluate good and marginal production samples, including surface variation, to establish the acceptable marking quality and reading configuration.

Does the 45 frames/s specification mean 45 parts per second?

No. The 45 frames/s figure describes image acquisition, while production throughput also depends on exposure, decoding, triggering and communication timing. Moving parts must remain readable within the field of view long enough to complete the reading attempt. Validate the complete trigger-to-result cycle at the intended line speed, including difficult marks and the required response to failed reads.

Can Matrix 220 XAI verify DPM code quality to ISO/IEC 29158?

The reader provides code-quality metrics referencing ISO/IEC 29158, but a successful decode alone does not demonstrate that a mark meets a required grade. For contractual acceptance testing, specify the grading standard, illumination geometry, calibration and reporting requirements. Confirm whether the proposed measurement setup satisfies those requirements or whether a dedicated verifier is needed.

Can Matrix 220 XAI connect to a PLC through PROFINET or EtherNet/IP?

Yes. Onboard interfaces support PROFINET IO, EtherNet/IP and Modbus TCP, with OPC UA available for compatible systems. Integration requires configuration of the trigger, result format, timing and failed-read handling. Provide the PLC model and required protocol so the reader firmware, network configuration and control-system project can be checked together before commissioning.

What software is needed, and does Automatic Setup complete commissioning?

Datalogic DL.CODE is the Windows-based configuration software, while the X-PRESS button supports local setup functions. Automatic Setup helps establish reading parameters, but commissioning also requires application-specific communication settings and testing across production variations. Save the validated configuration and confirm the behaviour for good reads, failed reads and unexpected code content before releasing the station into production.

Does Matrix 220 XAI support PoE, and what installation accessories are needed?

The documented XAI DPM models require 10–30 VDC; PoE availability elsewhere in the Matrix 220 family should not be assumed for an XAI reader. Specify compatible power/I/O and Ethernet cables, mounting hardware and any connection box required by the installation. Allow clearance for rotating connectors, protective covers and cable bends. Moving installations also require suitable flexible cables.

What temperature, ingress and ESD protection does Matrix 220 XAI provide?

XAI DPM models are specified for operation at 0–45°C with IP65 and IP67 protection when installed as required. These ratings do not establish compatibility with every cleaning chemical or washdown process. Electrostatic-discharge protection and Anti-YAG laser-filter protection depend on the selected cover or model configuration. Check whether an ESD cover is already included in the ordered part number.

What information should I provide for a Matrix 220 XAI quotation?

Provide code photographs or representative samples, barcode format, overall dimensions, module size, marking method and material finish. Include working distance, mounting space, part movement, cycle time, PLC protocol and environmental requirements. State the quantity and any existing reader part number. Identify any required configuration assistance or equipment maintenance and support so the quotation can define hardware and service scope separately.
