Datalogic STS320 for Tire Tracking and Sorting

The STS320 combines multiple Matrix 320 ATS readers in a pre-assembled, pre-configured and factory-validated system. Each reader uses a 1920 × 1080-pixel image sensor, while the array provides coverage across the conveyor where tire dimensions and label positions vary.

It suits production and distribution lines that need a стационарен баркод скенер for green tires before curing, vulcanised tires, finished tire sorting and tire or wheel identification. Dedicated near-range models support bottom reading where the conveyor provides an unobstructed view of the label.

Choose the Reading Width, Barcode Resolution and Working Distance

Field of view is the area covered by the readers. Depth of field is the distance interval within which the specified barcode remains readable without refocusing. The published 0.25 mm resolution describes the smallest barcode element, not the overall label size or the depth of field.

Reading width depends on the model and number of heads. Standard-resolution and high-resolution systems can cover the same width, but they require different reader counts and mounting distances.

STS320 configurations with a published 1,250 mm reading width
Model and application Reader heads Code resolution Reading distance
STS320-004: standard-range top reading 4 0.30 мм 830–1,080 mm
STS320-016: high-resolution top reading 6 0.25 mm 620–870 mm
STS320-104: long-range top reading 4 0.35 mm 850–1,250 mm
STS320-116: high-resolution, long-range top reading 6 0.25 mm 830–1,230 mm
STS320-205: near-range and bottom reading 5 0.30 мм 280–450 mm

These are model-specific optical specifications. Confirm performance with representative labels at the nearest and farthest positions, including label angle, surface condition, conveyor speed and minimum tire spacing. The 1.5 m/s system speed specification does not establish a universal number of tires per hour.

Примерен конфигурационен пример

A 1,250 mm top-reading zone with 0.25 mm barcode elements requires assessment of the six-head STS320-016 or STS320-116, according to the available reading distance. The four-head STS320-004 covers the same width but is specified for 0.30 mm elements. Conveyor width alone is therefore insufficient for model selection.

Supported Barcodes

The readers support standard 1D barcode formats and 2D formats including Data Matrix, QR Code, Micro QR, Maxicode, Aztec and DotCode. Decoding support does not establish readability at every distance: submit the actual code format, element size and label samples for the proposed configuration.

Installation, Power and Control-System Integration

Factory assembly establishes the reader layout, but commissioning still requires mounting, electrical connections, trigger configuration and communication with the line controls. Integrated aiming, the X-PRESS button interface and Windows-based DL.CODE software support setup and adjustment.

The system requires 24 V DC ±10%. Published maximum supply current ranges from 3.1 A for three-head systems to 6.0 A for six-head systems. Specify the power supply, power and communication cables, connection hardware and mounting arrangement with the selected array.

Assembly dimensions also vary. For example, STS320-004 and STS320-016 measure 1,095 × 177 × 119.1 mm. Check the selected model’s drawing and allow additional clearance for connectors, cable bends, cleaning and individual reader replacement.

Interfaces and Production Data

Connectivity includes 10/100/1000 Mbit/s Ethernet, RS-232/RS-422 serial communication and Datalogic ID-NET reader networking. Supported industrial Ethernet protocols include PROFINET IO, EtherNet/IP and Modbus TCP. Reader I/O provides two inputs and three configurable outputs.

Define how each trigger corresponds to a tire, which barcode data the host expects and what the line should do after a failed or unexpected read. Connecting results to a manufacturing execution system, warehouse system or sorting controller requires compatible host communication and application logic.

Diagnostics and Reader Maintenance

The web interface and Mosaic view support monitoring across the reader array. Runtime unreadable-code detection and classification, together with high-speed image saving, help maintenance teams investigate failed reads and label damage. Configurable 360-degree visual feedback provides local indications of reading and configuration status.

A no-read event flags an identification failure; it does not recover information from a missing or fully obscured barcode. Define a reject, recirculation or manual-check process alongside the scanning installation.

Individual readers can be replaced without replacing the complete array. Include configuration backups, spare-reader matching and a post-replacement reading check in the maintenance plan. If centralised WebSentinel Plus supervision is required, specify its separate licence and host requirements in the quotation.

Operating Limits Around Tire Curing Processes

The specified operating temperature is −10 to 50 °C, with humidity up to 90% non-condensing. IP65 and IP67 protection depends on correctly fitted covers, seals and suitable connections. High ambient temperatures also require attention to mounting and heat dissipation.

Datalogic lists sulphur gas resistance for the range. Confirm the exposure conditions and required protective configuration before ordering. Installation near a curing process must still keep the reader within its temperature limits.

STS320, Matrix 320 ATS or an Individual Matrix Reader?

Choose STS320 when a tire conveyor needs the combined coverage of a factory-configured array. Matrix 320 ATS assemblies are the tire-specific readers used within these systems and can also be assessed for picking stations, spinning tires, tire-building equipment and identification at test or inspection machines. Barcode identification at an inspection station does not make the scanner a tire-defect inspection system.

For a smaller reading area or a consistently presented label, an individual Datalogic Matrix 320 2MP may be sufficient. Both use 1920 × 1080-pixel imaging per reader; STS320 adds a coordinated tire-reading array, while the general Matrix range offers selectable optics and illumination. Compare configurations using the same barcode samples, working distances, reading area and line speed.

STS320 Buying Questions

Can STS320 Replace an Existing STS400 Installation?

Datalogic describes STS320 as backward-compatible with the previous STS400 generation. Provide the installed model, mechanical drawings, wiring, communication protocol and reading requirements so the replacement scope can be checked before ordering.

What Determines the STS320 Price?

The quotation depends on reader count, code resolution, reading distance and top- or bottom-reading configuration. Datalogic STS320 FAQs

Which tire tracking applications suit the Datalogic STS320?

The STS320 suits automated barcode identification of green tires, vulcanised tires and finished tires during production, sorting and distribution. It supports standard 1D barcodes and 2D formats including Data Matrix and QR Code. Selection depends on label visibility, tire dimensions and conveyor geometry. At a testing station, its role is to identify the tire and associate records with it; physical defect inspection requires separate equipment.

When should I choose STS320 instead of an individual Matrix 320 reader?

Choose STS320 when varying tire sizes and label positions require the combined coverage of a factory-configured reader array. An individual Datalogic Matrix 320 2MP barcode reader may suit a smaller reading area with consistently presented labels. Compare the usable reading width and distance range for your smallest barcode, rather than selecting solely by sensor resolution.

How do standard-resolution and high-resolution STS320 models differ?

High-resolution models accommodate smaller barcode elements, but can require more readers for the same coverage. STS320-004 uses four readers for a 1,250 mm reading width at 0.30 mm code resolution and 830–1,080 mm reading distance. STS320-016 uses six readers for the same width at 0.25 mm and 620–870 mm. Code resolution describes the smallest barcode element, so provide that measurement alongside the available mounting distance.

Can STS320 read tire labels from underneath a conveyor?

Yes. STS320-203, STS320-204 and STS320-205 are near-range configurations for bottom reading, with a published reading-distance range of 280–450 mm at 0.30 mm code resolution. The conveyor must provide an unobstructed optical path to the label. Check roller spacing, structural obstructions and access for cleaning; mounting a reader below an opaque belt does not provide visibility through it.

What conveyor speed can STS320 support, and how does this affect throughput?

Datalogic specifies conveyor speeds up to 1.5 m/s, subject to the selected configuration and application conditions. This figure does not directly specify tires per hour: tire dimensions and spacing determine how frequently items reach the reading zone. Validate the intended speed with the smallest codes, shortest tire gaps and most difficult label positions, including the timing required to associate each result with the correct tire.

How does STS320 help investigate damaged labels and failed reads?

STS320 provides unreadable-code detection and classification, image saving and web diagnostics to investigate identification failures. Reviewing captured images can help distinguish label damage from poor presentation, obstruction or an unsuitable reading setup. These tools do not establish that every damaged barcode can be decoded. Test representative worn labels and define how the line handles tires that require recirculation or manual identification.

Is STS320 suitable for installation near tire curing equipment?

STS320 is intended for tire-production environments, and Datalogic lists sulphur gas resistance for the range. Its operating temperature is −10 to 50 °C, with humidity up to 90% non-condensing and IP65/IP67 protection. Assess conditions at the reader’s mounting position, including heat from nearby equipment. Confirm the protective covers and connections required for the exposure; ingress protection alone does not establish chemical resistance.

What installation work and accessories does an STS320 system require?

The array arrives pre-assembled and pre-configured, but requires mechanical mounting, a suitably sized 24 V DC ±10% supply, power and communication cables, and commissioning on the conveyor. Specify connection hardware, trigger arrangements and clearance for cleaning or reader replacement. Where project assistance is required, agree the scope of Marveltech’s integration and maintenance services alongside the equipment quotation.

Can STS320 connect to a PLC or factory traceability system?

Yes. STS320 supports Ethernet and serial communication, with industrial Ethernet protocols including PROFINET IO, EtherNet/IP and Modbus TCP. Integration still requires agreement on trigger timing, data formatting and the response to missing or unexpected codes. For factory or warehouse traceability, define how the receiving system links each barcode to its tire, production record and downstream routing decision.

Which software is used with STS320, and is WebSentinel Plus included?

Datalogic’s Windows-based DL.CODE software is used for configuration, while the web interface and Mosaic view support monitoring across the readers. WebSentinel Plus is a separate supervisory software option, with licences listed separately from the scanner hardware. If centralised supervision or image management is required, specify the number of arrays, required functions, licence entitlement and host requirements in the quotation.

Can STS320 replace an existing Datalogic STS400 installation?

Datalogic describes STS320 as backward-compatible with the STS400 generation. Before selecting a replacement, compare the installed reading envelope, mounting arrangement, wiring and communication settings with the proposed STS320 configuration. Supply the existing model number and drawings, and include a production acceptance check covering your current labels and conveyor speed. Compatibility does not by itself define the installation work required.

What information should I provide for an STS320 quotation?

Provide tire dimensions, label locations, conveyor width and speed, minimum tire spacing, and the nearest and farthest label distances. Include barcode samples with the smallest bar or cell size, mounting photographs, environmental conditions and PLC or host details. Use the STS320 enquiry form to request itemised pricing for the array, accessories, software and required project services, with availability and lead time confirmed.
