Safety Area Monitoring for Machinery and Mobile Robots

Laser Sentinel Enhanced detects intrusion into a configured protective field and switches its safety outputs off so the connected safety control system can stop or inhibit hazardous movement. It supports stationary machine guarding and mobile applications where the active field changes with operating conditions.

The scanner uses time-of-flight measurement: it calculates distance from the time taken for emitted light pulses to return. Detection takes place within a scanning plane, so mounting height, obstructions and possible access routes matter as much as the field outline.

Choosing the Protective Field

Detection capability describes the object size the configured scanner can detect under its specified conditions. Finer detection reduces the available safety range, so a requirement for small-object detection should be checked before selecting the scanner by distance alone.

The advertised coverage of more than 72 m² describes the maximum 5.5 m scanning sector. Usable protection depends on the field shape, mounting position, obstructions and required safety distances. Machine structures or stored materials can leave areas outside the scanner’s view.

Field dimensions must account for the complete stopping response, including the scanner, safety control system and machine or vehicle. The scanner’s response time is only one part of that calculation.

Standalone or Master-Remote Configuration?

Choose the configuration by the number of viewing positions, independently controlled safety fields and operating states the application requires.

Standalone Models

SLS-SA3-08 and SLS-SA5-08 provide one OSSD pair. With one safety zone, they support three zone sets in any activation order, or up to six using permitted switching sequences.

A Standalone model suits an individual machine or a straightforward mobile application where one scanner can cover the required field and the available switching arrangements are sufficient.

Master and Remote Models

SLS-M5-1708-E supports up to 70 zone sets with suitable input allocation and both connectors in use. SLS-M5-E-1708-E adds encoder inputs for speed measurement.

Master-Remote arrangements provide additional viewing positions for layouts that one scanner cannot cover. Select the Master’s I/O capacity against the required safety outputs, warning outputs, field switching and other functions together.

Field Switching for AGVs and Changing Machine States

A zone set contains the fields selected for a particular operating condition. Switching between sets allows an AGV to use different protection for forward travel, reversing or different speeds. Stationary machinery can use separate sets for defined production or loading states.

Illustrative application: an AGV travelling along an open aisle may need a longer forward protective field than it needs during a validated low-speed docking manoeuvre. The field selection, speed information and stopping distance must agree throughout the transition.

Vehicle localisation and route guidance are separate integration requirements. For that function, consider the LGS-N50 Navigation LiDAR Scanner; its navigation role does not establish suitability for personnel safeguarding or direct compatibility with the safety system.

Configuration and Machine Integration

DLSentinel PC software is used to configure fields and operating functions. OSSD means output signal switching device: these monitored safety outputs connect to a suitable safety relay or safety PLC, which controls the required machine response.

Available functions include automatic or manual restart, external device monitoring (EDM), reference-point monitoring, partial dynamic muting and override. EDM checks downstream switching devices. Muting temporarily suspends a defined protective function under controlled conditions; its use requires appropriate inputs and a validated safeguarding design.

Before specifying the hardware, establish the mounting positions, field boundaries, required safety level, stopping performance and available control-system inputs. Include mounting brackets, matching cables and any encoder requirements in the configuration.

Applications and Selection Limits

  • Robot cells: monitor loading areas and access routes where intrusion must trigger a defined safety response.
  • Palletisers and depalletisers: protect accessible working areas while accounting for pallets and loads that may obstruct detection.
  • Open machinery and process lines: monitor approach or presence where the machine can reach a safe condition before a person reaches the hazard.
  • AGVs, AGCs and mobile robots: use validated field switching matched to travel direction, speed and stopping performance.

The scanner’s Type 3, PL d and SIL 2 ratings must suit the required safety function; fitting the device does not establish the rating of the complete machine. Optical detection also does not contain ejected parts, sparks or process material, so physical guarding may still be required.

For a hygienic machine opening requiring finger detection, the SG4-H Hygienic Safety Light Curtain offers Type 4 protection, 14 mm resolution and IP69K construction. It protects the plane between an emitter and receiver, whereas Laser Sentinel monitors a configured scanning field; the two geometries serve different safeguarding requirements.

Laser Sentinel Enhanced Buying Questions

Can it work with an existing safety PLC?

Check the selected model’s OSSD outputs against the PLC’s safety-input requirements, including output test-pulse handling and electrical limits. Field-switching inputs, restart behaviour and fault responses also need to match the intended safety function.

Can one scanner replace the guarding around a robot cell?

That depends on access routes, visibility, stopping performance and the hazards identified in the risk assessment. A scanner can monitor an open access area, but a person must not be able to reach hazardous movement through an unmonitored route or remain undetected behind an obstruction.

Laser Sentinel Enhanced FAQs

When is Laser Sentinel Enhanced suitable for robot cell protection?

Laser Sentinel Enhanced suits robot cells, palletisers and open machinery where detecting entry into a protective field can trigger a stop before someone reaches hazardous movement. Its Type 3, PL d and SIL 2 ratings must match the required safety function. Check access routes and obstructions: the scanner monitors a plane, and physical guarding may still be needed to contain ejected parts or process material.

How does detection capability affect the 3 m and 5.5 m safety ranges?

Finer detection reduces the available safety range. On 5.5 m models, maximum range is 2.5 m at 30 mm detection capability, 3 m at 40 mm, 4 m at 50 mm, and 5.5 m at 70 or 150 mm. The 3 m models reach 2.5 m at 30 mm and 3 m at the other settings. These millimetre values describe detectable object size, not measurement accuracy.

Should I choose a Standalone or Master-Remote Laser Sentinel?

Standalone models suit one viewing position and provide one safety-output pair. Their six zone sets require permitted switching sequences; three are available in any activation order when using one safety field. Master models support Remote scanners and greater I/O capacity. SLS-M5-1708-E offers up to 70 sets with both connectors and suitable input allocation. Check field switching, restart and warning functions together because they share available I/O.

How does Laser Sentinel Enhanced compare with an SG4-H safety light curtain?

Choose Laser Sentinel for configurable area monitoring around machinery or vehicles. The SG4-H Hygienic Safety Light Curtain provides Type 4, 14 mm finger detection across the plane between an emitter and receiver, with an enclosure designed for hygienic cleaning. Selection depends on access geometry, required safety performance and cleaning conditions; the devices are not interchangeable solely because both detect intrusion.

Does the 40 m warning range provide personnel protection?

No. Personnel safeguarding relies on the configured safety fields within the selected model’s permitted safety range. Warning fields provide non-safety detection for alerts or operational responses. The quoted 40 m warning range applies to a white target with 90% reflectivity; other surfaces can reduce detection range. A warning field cannot extend the scanner’s certified protective field.

Can Laser Sentinel Enhanced adapt its protective fields to AGV speed?

Yes. Zone sets can be selected for different vehicle speeds, directions and operating states. SLS-M5-E-1708-E adds encoder inputs for speed measurement; field selection must remain consistent with actual motion and stopping distance. Navigation requires a separate assessment: the LGS-N50 Navigation LiDAR Scanner supplies data for vehicle guidance, while Laser Sentinel provides the protective-field function. Assess control-system interfaces for each role.

What determines the scanner’s mounting position and distance from the hazard?

Mounting depends on approach paths, detection capability, scan-plane height and the complete stopping response. Use the configured scanner response time, applicable Remote communication delay, safety-controller response and machine or vehicle stopping performance. The 275° scan angle does not establish unobstructed coverage. Check blind areas behind loads or structures and validate the protective field under the intended operating conditions.

Can Laser Sentinel Enhanced connect to an existing safety PLC?

Yes, provided the PLC’s safety inputs are compatible with the selected scanner’s OSSD pairs: monitored electronic safety outputs. Check test-pulse handling, electrical limits, connector pin assignments and the required restart behaviour. These Enhanced models use wired safety outputs; Ethernet supports configuration and measurement data. An Ethernet connection alone does not provide the machine’s safety-stop interface.

Which software and accessories are needed to configure Laser Sentinel Enhanced?

Use DLSentinel PC software over Ethernet, selecting a release compatible with the scanner and firmware. Specify matching M12 power and I/O cables, an Ethernet configuration cable, suitable mounting brackets and any Master-Remote connection cables. These accessories are ordered separately. Include a suitable 24 V DC supply and compatible safety-control equipment in the installation plan, then validate the downloaded configuration on the machine.

Can partial dynamic muting allow pallets through a protected area?

Yes, where the selected configuration supports the required muting arrangement. Partial dynamic muting temporarily suspends protection in a defined portion of the safety field during an authorised material movement. It requires appropriate external signals, available inputs and validated sensor positioning and timing. Define the permitted load movement and how personnel access remains protected throughout the muted interval.

Is Laser Sentinel Enhanced suitable for dust, outdoor use or washdown?

It is intended for indoor operation at −10 to +50°C in non-condensing conditions, with an IP65 enclosure. The manufacturer excludes outdoor use. Dust filtering can reduce unwanted detections, but airborne contamination and a dirty optical window can impair detection. Assess cleaning exposure separately: IP65 does not establish suitability for high-pressure, high-temperature washdown or aggressive cleaning chemicals.

What information should I send Marveltech for a Laser Sentinel Enhanced quotation?

Send a layout showing hazards, access routes, obstructions and proposed mounting positions, together with detection requirements, stopping-time data, operating speeds and the existing safety controller. Identify scanner quantities, zone-set requirements, encoder needs, cable lengths and brackets. If you need industrial automation services, specify installation, configuration or maintenance requirements and request confirmation of the scope, included accessories, lead time and warranty.
