The Datalogic Gryphon 4600 Series is a handheld 2D barcode scanner for retail checkout, inventory control, healthcare identification and production tracking, reading codes from labels, packaging and mobile screens. Corded and cordless configurations, High Performance and High Density optics, and healthcare enclosure options let you match the scanner to your barcode sizes, working distances and connection requirements.
Within MarvelTech’s range of handheld barcode scanners, the Gryphon 4600 suits counters, packing stations, clinical workstations and light manufacturing applications where operators handle different labels throughout the day. Choose the optics, connection and enclosure together: a scanner selected for small component codes may need a different configuration from one used for checkout or bedside identification.
The series reads common 1D and 2D formats, including QR Code and Data Matrix, and supports GS1 Digital Link and digital watermark applications. Its dual-core processor and AI-assisted decoding help with difficult or damaged symbols, although results still depend on code condition, contrast, size and presentation.
GS1 Digital Link support addresses barcode capture. Your receiving application must also interpret the transmitted data correctly; reading a code does not by itself establish compatibility with a POS, warehouse or healthcare system.
High Performance (HP) models combine 1.5 MP and VGA sensors to accommodate different barcode sizes and reading distances. Their depth of field—the distance range over which a code can be read—is useful when operators alternate between nearby labels and larger codes farther away.
The GD4620 High Density (HD) model uses a single sensor and is intended for fine barcode detail. Select it using the smallest barcode elements and required working distance, rather than the overall label size. Test curved labels, reflective packaging and damaged samples under the intended lighting conditions.
| Model | Optics | Connection and power | Selection priority |
|---|---|---|---|
| GD4620 HD | Single-sensor High Density | USB only; 5 V DC | Small, dense codes at a fixed workstation |
| GD4690 HP | Dual-sensor High Performance | USB or RS-232; 4.5–14 V DC | Mixed barcode sizes with a corded host connection |
| GBT4600 HP | Dual-sensor High Performance | Bluetooth; inductive charging; battery and selected SuperCap configurations | Movement around a counter, cart or workstation |
| GM4600 HP | Dual-sensor High Performance | Datalogic STAR radio; 433 MHz or 910 MHz variants; inductive charging | A dedicated radio connection through a matching base |
Scanner-only products and complete kits have different contents. Specify the host connector, interface cable, base and power supply when ordering. For GM4600 deployments, the scanner and base must use matching radio versions appropriate to the installation country.
Healthcare (HC) identifies the enclosure configuration, rather than a separate optical technology. HC versions have disinfectant-ready housings and antimicrobial additives for environments involving frequent cleaning. Follow the approved cleaning instructions; antimicrobial materials do not replace cleaning and disinfection.
A green crosshair helps operators aim, while Datalogic’s Green Spot confirms a successful barcode read on the target. This is useful where a beeper is difficult to hear or unsuitable for the setting. Good-read feedback confirms decoding, not that the receiving application has saved or accepted the transaction.
The Datalogic Gryphon 4500 also provides 1D and 2D reading, corded and cordless options, and inductive charging on cordless models. Its 1 MP imaging platform differs from the 4600 HP models’ 1.5 MP plus VGA arrangement and adaptive dual-colour illumination.
For an established 4500 installation, compare both scanners using the same labels, distances and host application. The 4600 HP is worth evaluating where varied barcode sizes or difficult reads create repeated handling; sensor resolution alone is not a measure of scanning success.
Cordless Gryphon 4600 models use inductive charging, transferring power without exposed charging contacts. Li-Ion battery and selected SuperCap configurations provide different approaches to cordless operation. A SuperCap pack stores energy in capacitors instead of a conventional battery and still requires recharging.
Choose the power arrangement around scan frequency, time away from the base and opportunities to return the scanner for charging. Compare operating time and recharge requirements for the exact configuration before selecting a battery-free option.
The series incorporates recycled materials and supports reuse of selected Gryphon accessories. Check existing cable, stand, charger and base part numbers individually. Datalogic lists adapters for particular earlier mounting systems; mounting compatibility should not be treated as confirmation of radio or charging compatibility.
Retail checkout benefits from handling packaging labels and mobile vouchers on one device. Packing stations need consistent capture of item and shipment codes, while production benches may require HD optics for small component labels. Healthcare selection should account for both barcode detail and the cleaning procedure.
For wet, dusty or physically demanding handling, compare the Datalogic PowerScan 9600 Series, whose scanners carry IP65 and IP67 protection ratings. Specify operating temperature, exposure to liquids, expected drops and reading distance when assessing either family. Small printed-code capability should also be assessed separately from reading codes etched or dot-peened directly into parts.
Select the interface around the receiving equipment and software. The GD4620 is USB-only, while the GD4690 provides USB and RS-232 options. Cordless installations also require the appropriate host connection or matching base. Output formatting, field separators and application behaviour need to be configured for the intended workflow.
Illustrative packing-station configuration: a GD4690 HP connected by USB could capture an item code followed by a shipping-label code. Configure the output expected by the warehouse application, then test that each scan reaches the correct field and that the software rejects an item assigned to the wrong order. This checks the complete workflow as well as barcode readability.
MarvelTech can review your barcode samples, working environment and connection requirements to recommend a scanner and accessory configuration. Include the number of devices, smallest codes, scanning distances, host system, corded or cordless preference, cleaning requirements and any existing accessory part numbers.
Request an itemised quotation covering the scanner, cable, base, power arrangement and any required configuration, integration or support services. Ask for availability, lead time, warranty terms and service coverage for the selected configuration and delivery location.
The Gryphon 4600 suits operator-led barcode capture at retail checkouts, packing stations, production benches and healthcare workstations. Selection depends on the smallest barcode elements, working distance, operator movement and cleaning requirements. For repetitive tasks, assess how easily users can aim, obtain a read and transfer the result into the correct application field throughout a normal shift.
High Performance models combine 1.5 MP and VGA sensors for reading across varied distances, while the GD4620 High Density model uses a single 1.5 MP sensor for compact codes. HP models also read high-density symbols, so HD is not automatically the better choice for every small label. Compare the reading range for your barcode type and smallest bar or cell width.
An upgrade is worth evaluating when operators frequently reposition labels or repeat scans. The Gryphon 4500 handheld scanner uses a 1 MP imaging platform; Gryphon 4600 HP models add dual-sensor optics and dual-colour illumination. Compare both using the same difficult labels, working distances and host application. Measure successful first reads and completed transactions rather than judging the upgrade by sensor resolution alone.
Choose GD4620 HD for a USB workstation or GD4690 HP when you need HP optics and USB or RS-232. GBT4600 provides Bluetooth connectivity, while GM4600 uses Datalogic STAR radio through a matching receiver. For cordless deployments, specify the host device, installation country and movement area. Assess radio coverage around shelving and equipment; open-air range figures do not describe every installation.
Yes. The series supports barcode reading from mobile screens and GS1 Digital Link codes, alongside common printed 1D and 2D symbols. For vouchers or tickets, test actual phones at typical brightness settings and viewing angles. For GS1 Digital Link, agree which data the receiving system needs and validate the transmitted output; successful decoding alone does not establish compatibility with your checkout or inventory software.
Suitability requires testing actual marked parts; small printed-code capability does not establish Direct Part Marking performance. Reflections, surface texture and marking depth can change how a code appears to the scanner. For demanding etched or dot-peened identifiers, evaluate the PowerScan 9600 DPX Direct Part Marking scanner, which provides dedicated DPM illumination and autofocus. Supply representative parts, including difficult production samples.
The required setup depends on how your application accepts barcode data. Datalogic provides Aladdin configuration software at no charge, but scanner configuration and business-system integration are separate tasks. Agree the interface, enabled barcode types, prefixes, suffixes and field separators, then test complete transactions. Green Spot confirms a successful read; the receiving application determines whether that data is accepted and saved.
Specify an HC configuration when the application requires its disinfectant-ready enclosure and antimicrobial additives. HC describes the enclosure option, so the optics and connection still need separate selection. Match the approved cleaning agents and procedure to your workplace requirements before ordering. Antimicrobial additives do not replace routine cleaning and disinfection, and a healthcare enclosure does not establish compatibility with every chemical.
Choose around the time spent away from the charging base and the opportunities to recharge. Li-Ion and selected SuperCap configurations offer different charging and operating characteristics. SuperCap stores energy in capacitors and still needs recharging. For a counter workflow with frequent returns to the base, assess SuperCap; for longer mobile sessions, compare its usable operating time with the battery configuration under your scanning workload.
Datalogic specifies IP52 sealing and an operating temperature of 0°C to 50°C for Gryphon 4600. Assess these limits against actual exposure, particularly condensation, heavy dust, washdown or refrigerated storage. For more demanding handling, compare the PowerScan 9600 industrial scanner range. Include the base station, power supply and charging location in the environmental assessment.
Some earlier Gryphon accessories can be reused, but compatibility needs checking by part number. Confirm mechanical fit, electrical requirements, charging support and radio compatibility separately. Datalogic lists adapters for particular earlier mounting systems; an adapter for a mounting position does not establish compatibility with the previous base’s electronics. Provide the existing scanner, base, cable and power-supply references when planning a replacement.
Send barcode samples, the smallest bar or cell dimensions, required reading distances, scan frequency, host-system details and device quantity. Include damaged or reflective examples, cleaning requirements, installation country and existing accessory references. Request an itemised configuration covering the scanner, interface cable, base, power pack, power supply and mounting accessories where required, with availability, warranty terms and any configuration or integration work confirmed separately.
