The Datalogic PowerScan 9600 DPX is a rugged handheld Direct Part Marking scanner for component traceability, work-in-progress tracking and production quality-control workflows. It reads barcodes marked directly onto parts by laser etching, dot peening, inkjet printing and electrochemical etching, alongside conventional printed labels.
Direct Part Marking (DPM) places an identification code directly on a component rather than on an adhesive label. The PowerScan 9600 DPX captures these identifiers at assembly benches, inspection stations and production checkpoints in automotive, aerospace, electronics and other manufacturing operations.
Support for both marked parts and printed labels lets an operator scan a component, its production order and its packaging with the same device. The connected application then associates those identifiers with the relevant production or inspection record.
Reading a code on metal or a textured surface requires different lighting from reading black bars on a white label. The DPX combines autofocus with white, red and blue LED illumination to address these changing conditions.
Datalogic’s patented 4D learning system uses distance and colour sensors to assess the target, including its inclination and reflectance. It automatically adjusts image-acquisition settings and decoding algorithms, reducing repeated manual setup when operators move between different marked parts.
Successful decoding is indicated by Datalogic’s 3GL feedback: a Green Spot projected onto the code and two good-read LEDs. An adjustable beeper and vibration provide additional confirmation.

Reading distances depend on code size, contrast, lighting and scanning angle. Treat these figures as reference values, then assess actual marked parts at the intended working distance, particularly where surfaces are reflective, curved, coated or contaminated.
The PowerScan 9600 DPX datasheet provides the full decoding, electrical and accessory specifications.
Cordless versions charge in a compatible base without exposed scanner-to-cradle charging contacts. This removes contact wear and contamination from that charging connection, while the removable battery supports battery replacement between shifts.
Datalogic specifies approximately 3.2 hours for a full charge using an external 12 V DC supply. Plan charging around the permitted temperature range and the actual scanning workload.
The PD9630-DPX provides USB and RS-232 connectivity for assembly benches, inspection stations and other locations where the operator works beside a terminal. Specify the required cable and power arrangement when ordering; scanner-only and interface-kit part numbers have different contents.
The PBT9600-DPX uses Bluetooth 5.0 for connection to a compatible host or Bluetooth base station. It supports HID for keyboard-style input and SPP for serial communication; the receiving device and application must support the chosen profile.
The published radio range is up to 100 m in open air when measured with the base station. Direct-host connections and obstructed factory layouts can give different results.
The STAR version uses Datalogic’s proprietary radio system and includes a 1.8-inch OLED display with four configurable keys. The display can support operator prompts and host responses when these are implemented in the application.
For the 433 MHz version, published open-air range is up to 150 m at low radio speed or 100 m at high speed. Match the scanner and receiver frequency, and specify the installation country when selecting the regional version.
USB and RS-232 suit workstation connections. Ethernet, EtherNet/IP and PROFINET require the appropriate communication module or base configuration; a USB kit does not provide these connections by itself.
Choose the scanner, interface hardware, cables, power supply and cradle protection rating together. Where future interface changes matter, specify a modular base: the USB-only BC9620 does not accept CM96xx communication modules.
Connecting to a manufacturing execution system (MES), enterprise resource planning system (ERP) or warehouse management system (WMS) also requires agreement on the data format and receiving software. Reading a barcode and accepting a production transaction are separate steps.
A PD9630-DPX USB kit could capture a laser-marked component code followed by a printed work-order barcode. The workstation application would compare the component with the order and record the result. During setup, test separators, prefixes, suffixes and duplicate-scan handling; the scanner’s good-read indication confirms decoding, while the application determines whether the component is acceptable.
For predominantly printed production, carton and inventory labels, consider the Standard Range version of the Datalogic PowerScan 9600. It uses white illumination for general barcode reading, while DPX adds dedicated DPM illumination and autofocus for directly marked surfaces.
Both offer IP65/IP67 scanner protection and corded or cordless configurations. Their published minimum 2D element sizes differ: 6 mil for Standard Range and 4 mil for DPX. These resolution figures do not establish readability on a particular material; choose DPX when the marking method and surface require its specialised optics.
Suitability depends on the combination of marking quality, code dimensions, material and surface finish. Supply representative parts, including the hardest examples encountered after production treatments or handling. Photos help identify the application, but physical samples allow assessment of reflections, curvature and operator access.
Provide the exact scanner, cradle, cable and power-supply part numbers. Reuse needs to be checked against the selected DPX model, radio system, interface and electrical requirements; a shared PowerScan family name is insufficient to establish compatibility.
MarvelTech supplies barcode and industrial automation equipment and provides maintenance and support services. For a DPX enquiry, ask for the proposed scanner, connection hardware and accessories to be itemised, together with any required configuration, integration or support work.
The quotation depends on the corded or cordless model, interface, cradle, cables, power supply, batteries, mounting accessories and service scope. Request confirmation of availability, delivery timing, warranty coverage and support at your installation location.

The PowerScan 9600 DPX reads identification codes marked directly onto components and conventional printed barcodes at manufacturing checkpoints. It suits component tracking, work-in-progress recording and assembly verification in automotive, aerospace and electronics production. Support for 1D, 2D and stacked codes lets operators capture part identifiers, work orders and packaging labels with one scanner.
Choose DPX when directly marked surfaces are central to the application: its dedicated DPM illumination and autofocus address different reading conditions from ordinary printed labels. For predominantly carton, production and inventory labels, assess the Standard Range version of the Datalogic PowerScan 9600 series. Base the choice on representative codes and working distances.
The DPX is designed for laser-etched, dot-peened and other directly marked codes, but suitability depends on the finished part. Reflections, curvature, coatings and contamination can change the visible contrast. Assess physical samples at the intended scanning angle, including difficult examples after surface treatment or handling; a photograph alone cannot reproduce those optical conditions.
Datalogic specifies typical distances of 2–10 cm for 5 mil Data Matrix codes and 2–16.2 cm for 10 mil codes. Here, mil describes the individual cell width in thousandths of an inch, not the overall symbol size. These ranges depend on contrast, lighting and scanning geometry, so validate the operator’s working distance using actual marked parts.
The 4D learning system automatically adjusts image-acquisition parameters and decoding algorithms for different DPM targets. This reduces repeated optical setup when operators move between marked parts. Host communication, enabled barcode types and output formatting still need to match the application; automatic reading adjustment does not configure the production software receiving the data.
The PD9630-DPX is corded with USB/RS-232 connectivity; the PBT9600-DPX uses Bluetooth 5.0; and the PM9600-DDPX uses Datalogic STAR radio with a display and four configurable keys. Choose according to operator movement, host compatibility and feedback requirements. For STAR installations, match the scanner and receiver frequency to the installation country. Validate cordless coverage around machinery and other obstructions.
Yes, with the appropriate communication module or base configuration. Specify the exact industrial protocol, compatible connection hardware, cabling and power supply when ordering; a USB kit does not include industrial Ethernet connectivity. If future interface changes matter, select a modular base: Datalogic lists the BC9620 as USB-only and incompatible with CM96xx communication modules.
Datalogic Aladdin is available without charge for scanner configuration, while MES or ERP integration depends on the receiving application. Agree the interface, barcode data format, separators and transaction rules with the software supplier. A successful decode or Green Spot indicates barcode reading; acceptance of the component, order or production transaction must be handled by the application.
The DPX primarily suits handheld scanning at operator checkpoints. For automatic identification of passing parts, assess stationary industrial barcode readers against line speed, trigger timing, code position and mounting space. A handheld reader’s ability to decode a sample does not establish suitability for the complete unattended inspection cycle.
The scanner carries IP65/IP67 ratings and an operating temperature range of −20°C to 50°C. Cradle protection is separate: only specified cradle models carry IP65. Check the complete installation, including connectors and power equipment, against dust, water and temperature exposure. An enclosure rating alone does not establish compatibility with cleaning chemicals or a particular washdown process.
Cordless DPX models use inductive charging in a compatible base and have removable batteries. Specify the matching cradle, host cable, power supply and any spare batteries or separate battery charger. Charging is permitted from 0°C to 40°C, narrower than the operating range, so a scanner used in a cold area may need a warmer charging location.
Provide the marking method, barcode type and dimensions, part material, surface finish and required reading distance through the PowerScan 9600 DPX enquiry form.
