Datalogic Gryphon 4200 Series 1D Barcode Scanner

The Gryphon 4200 reads standard linear barcodes, including GS1 DataBar linear codes, from product labels, documents and mobile screens. It is designed to handle small, dense codes and difficult print conditions, although readability depends on barcode size, contrast, damage and presentation.

Choose it for workflows that use 1D codes throughout. QR Code and Data Matrix require a 2D scanner, including when those codes appear on a phone screen or medicine pack.

Motionix, Barcode Targeting and Read Confirmation

Motionix detects movement and supports transitions between handheld and stand-mounted scanning. With the appropriate reading mode and stand, operators can alternate between picking up the scanner and presenting items to it.

The soft line viewfinder helps position the scanning line across the intended barcode when several codes appear close together. Datalogic’s 3GL feedback combines a Green Spot projected onto the code with two good-read LEDs; an adjustable beeper provides additional confirmation.

Visual feedback is useful at noisy checkouts and quiet laboratory desks. A successful decode should still be checked against the receiving application’s transaction status.

A mil is one thousandth of an inch and describes the barcode’s narrowest element. Published reading distances depend on print resolution, contrast and ambient light; symbol length and scanning angle also affect the minimum distance. Test representative labels at the intended working position.

The disinfectant-ready enclosure supports regular cleaning using the manufacturer’s specified products and procedures. For washdown, substantial liquid exposure or demanding warehouse handling, compare protection requirements across MarvelTech’s handheld barcode scanners.

Corded and Cordless Model Selection

Choose the connection around the workstation and required movement
Model Connection Selection priority
GD4220 Corded USB; 5 V DC A USB workstation where a cable provides sufficient reach
GD4290 Corded USB or RS-232; 4.5–14 V DC A workstation requiring a multi-interface scanner
GBT4200 Bluetooth wireless communication Movement around a counter or workstation with a compatible Bluetooth connection
GM4200 Datalogic STAR radio; 433 or 910 MHz versions Scanner-to-base communication using a matching regional radio version

Published open-air range is up to 100 m for GBT4200 with its base and 50 m for GM4200. Walls, shelving, interference and the receiving equipment affect usable coverage. Match the GM scanner and base frequency, and specify the installation country when ordering.

Select the host cable separately from the communication technology. USB Type-C connection requires the appropriate cable, while an RS-232 installation also needs the correct connector and power arrangement. Scanner-only products and complete kits have different contents.

Cordless Charging and Accessories

GBT4200 and GM4200 use inductive charging, which transfers power without exposed charging contacts. Their replaceable 2,550 mAh lithium-ion battery has a published recharge time of four hours with external 12 V DC power. Datalogic quotes up to 80,000 reads per charge; workload and operating conditions affect the result.

The WLC4190 provides a desk or wall charging-base arrangement. The series documentation also lists the adjustable WLC4090 for scanning while charging; request confirmation of the appropriate base and its availability if this is part of the workflow.

Applications and Selection Limits

  • Retail and commercial services: product labels, returns, customer references and document tracking at counters or service desks.
  • Light manufacturing: component labels, work-in-progress identification and order processing at production benches.
  • Laboratories and pharmacies: linear sample, inventory and document labels where the cleaning procedure matches the enclosure requirements. Data Matrix medicine-pack verification requires a 2D reader.
  • Ticketing and access control: printed or mobile-screen 1D tickets and passes. The receiving software must perform admission and ticket-validity checks.

Gryphon 4200 or a 2D Scanner?

The Datalogic Gryphon 4500 is a closely related alternative when QR Code, Data Matrix or other supported 2D formats are required. Its 1 MP area imager reads both 1D and 2D codes, while the Gryphon 4200 uses linear imaging for 1D capture. Both families offer corded and cordless configurations, Motionix and inductive charging on cordless models.

Compare the selected models using the same labels, distances and application. Choose the 4200 where its 1D capability covers the workflow; include a 2D reader in the evaluation if incoming labels or planned processes require it.

Connecting Scans to POS, Inventory and Business Software

Confirm the receiving application’s input method, required data format and host interface before choosing a scanner. A physical connection alone does not establish compatibility with a POS, ERP, laboratory or ticketing system. Barcode capture and business-record validation are separate parts of the workflow.

Illustrative packing-bench configuration: a GD4220 connected by USB captures linear item labels into an order application. Configure the expected end-of-scan character, then test that leading zeroes are retained, each value reaches the correct field and the application flags an item assigned to a different order. This checks the complete transaction alongside barcode readability.

Can Existing Cables, Stands or Bases Be Reused?

Provide the exact accessory part numbers for checking. Mechanical fit does not establish charging, radio or host-interface compatibility. A cordless base must match the scanner’s communication version, and the cable must suit the receiving terminal.

Request a Gryphon 4200 Quote from MarvelTech

MarvelTech can review barcode samples, workstation connections and cordless requirements to recommend a scanner and accessory configuration. Include the quantity, barcode formats and sizes, working distances, printed-label or screen use, host system, cleaning requirements and existing accessory part numbers.

Request an itemised quotation covering the scanner, cable, stand or cradle, power supply and any required configuration, integration or support services. Ask for availability, lead time, warranty terms and service coverage for the selected configuration and delivery location.

Datalogic Gryphon 4200 FAQs

When should I choose the Gryphon 4200 instead of the Gryphon 4500?

Choose the Gryphon 4200 when all required barcodes are linear 1D codes, such as product labels, document references or production tracking labels. The Datalogic Gryphon 4500 also reads QR Code, Data Matrix and other supported 2D formats. Check incoming supplier labels and planned workflow changes before selecting a 1D-only reader, particularly for medicine packaging or digital tickets.

What is the difference between GD4220, GD4290, GBT4200 and GM4200?

The GD4220 is a corded USB scanner, while the GD4290 supports USB and RS-232. The GBT4200 uses Bluetooth; the GM4200 uses Datalogic’s STAR Cordless System. Choose a corded model where cable reach covers the workstation. For cordless use, specify the receiving equipment and movement required; GM4200 scanners and bases must have matching regional radio versions.

Can the Gryphon 4200 read tickets and loyalty barcodes from phone screens?

Yes, it reads supported 1D barcodes displayed on mobile screens. Confirm the actual ticket or loyalty-code format, because a phone may display either a linear barcode or a 2D code. Present the complete symbol with its surrounding blank margins visible, and assess readability on representative devices. Ticket validity and loyalty-account recognition depend on the receiving application.

How far away can the Gryphon 4200 read small or damaged labels?

Reading distance depends on barcode size and condition. Datalogic lists typical ranges of 5–37 cm for 5 mil Code 39 and 3.5–90 cm for 13 mil EAN/UPC; mil describes the narrowest bar width in thousandths of an inch. These ranges do not establish performance on damaged labels. Include worn, curved and poorly printed samples when assessing the intended working position.

What wireless range should I expect from GBT4200 and GM4200?

Datalogic specifies open-air communication ranges of up to 100 m for GBT4200 with its base station and 50 m for GM4200. Direct Bluetooth connections can produce different results with other receiving devices. Assess coverage along the operator’s actual route, including shelving, walls and machinery. These figures describe scanner-to-receiver communication, not the distance from which a barcode can be read.

Can the Gryphon 4200 switch between handheld and hands-free scanning?

Yes. Motionix detects movement and supports transitions between handheld and stand-mounted reading when the appropriate scanning mode is configured. Include a compatible stand or cradle and position it so operators can present the whole barcode across the reading line. For counters handling both small products and bulky items, assess presentation scanning and handheld reach together.

Does Green Spot confirm that an item has been accepted by the application?

Green Spot provides good-read feedback on the barcode; it does not establish that the receiving application has accepted the transaction. The scanner also provides good-read LEDs and audible feedback. During setup, check what happens when an operator scans an unexpected item, repeats a scan or enters data into the wrong field. Application acceptance needs its own clear indication.

How long does the cordless Gryphon 4200 battery last, and how is it charged?

Datalogic quotes up to 80,000 reads per charge for cordless models. Their replaceable battery charges inductively through a compatible charging base, without exposed charging contacts. The published four-hour recharge time uses external 12 V DC power; do not apply that timing to every USB-powered arrangement. Plan charging around scan frequency, shift length, battery condition and available docking time.

What must be configured to use the Gryphon 4200 with POS or inventory software?

Match the scanner or base interface to the host, then configure how the application receives barcode data. Datalogic Aladdin supports scanner configuration; it does not replace POS or inventory software. Check the input mode, keyboard layout and required Enter or Tab suffix, then verify leading zeroes and destination fields. USB-C installations require the appropriate cable and host support.

Is the Gryphon 4200 suitable for laboratories and production areas?

It suits linear-label workflows where its disinfectant-ready housing and operating limits match the installation. Datalogic specifies IP52 protection, operation from −10 to +50°C and repeated 1.8 m drops onto concrete. Follow the approved cleaning procedure; disinfectant resistance does not establish washdown suitability. For heavier industrial exposure, compare the PowerScan 9100 industrial 1D scanner against your dust, liquid and handling requirements.

Can I reuse existing Datalogic cables, stands or charging bases?

Reuse depends on the exact accessory and scanner part numbers. Matching branding or physical fit does not establish electrical, charging or radio compatibility. For cordless installations, check the base’s communication version as well as its host connection. Send the existing equipment labels for assessment, and confirm whether the selected order includes a scanner alone or a kit with specified accessories.

What information should I provide for a Gryphon 4200 quotation?

Provide barcode samples and dimensions, working distance, host equipment and software, quantity, installation country, cleaning requirements and preferred corded or cordless arrangement. Include existing accessory part numbers. Request itemised pricing for the scanner, cable, stand or base, power supply and configuration work. Confirm lead time, warranty coverage and any required equipment maintenance and support services for the quoted installation.
