Image-Based 1D Reading for Machines and Conveyors

Blade captures and decodes linear barcodes using an electronic imaging system. Within MarvelTech’s range of fixed barcode scanners, it suits installations where labels pass through a defined reading zone for identification, routing or production traceability.

The imaging architecture removes the moving scan mechanism used in laser readers. Digital decoding can help with worn or poorly printed labels, although performance still depends on contrast, damage, barcode size and presentation. Representative label testing is particularly useful when unreadable codes interrupt production.

Blade 100 vs Blade 200

Select the model around the barcode’s position and size, the available mounting distance and the required connection to the control system.

Blade model differences for application selection
Фактор на подбор Blade 100 Blade 200
Published reading-distance envelope 40–320 mm across applicable versions and barcode sizes 40–600 mm across applicable focus settings and barcode sizes
Optical configurations Standard and dedicated high-resolution versions Selectable near, mid and far focus positions
Typical selection reason Shorter mounting distances or small 1D barcodes using the high-resolution version Greater mounting distance or applications requiring a choice of focus positions
Maximum power consumption 4.5 W 5.5 W

These distance envelopes do not mean that every barcode can be read throughout the stated range. Use the reading diagram for the selected version, focus and narrow-bar width—the width of the smallest bar in the code. Reading 0.10 mm bars requires the appropriate high-resolution configuration and working distance.

Both models have a published acquisition rate of 270 frames per second. This describes image capture, rather than a throughput of 270 products per second; conveyor performance also depends on exposure, label orientation, time in the reading zone and decoding conditions.

Supported Barcode Types

Blade reads Interleaved 2 of 5, Code 39, Code 93, Code 128, EAN/UPC, GS1-128, Codabar, Pharmacode, Plessey and ISBT128. These cover identification tasks such as carton tracking, work-in-progress control and label reading after print-and-apply operations.

Replacing Datalogic DS2X00 Readers

Datalogic positions Blade as the successor to the DS2X00 family, retaining installation characteristics and reading coverage intended to simplify migration. Blade 100 addresses DS2100 applications, while Blade 200 addresses DS2400 applications.

For a replacement, check the exact legacy part number, reading window, bracket, cable pinout, supply, communication protocol and trigger arrangement. Mechanical compatibility alone does not establish that existing wiring, network settings or configuration files can be reused unchanged.

Mounting, Power and Industrial Connections

Blade offers front-reading and side-reading versions, multiple fixing points and M12 connections. With the connector at 0°, typical dimensions are 104 × 68.5 × 38.5 mm for single-port Ethernet versions and 104 × 86 × 38.5 mm for dual-port versions. Allow additional space for connectors, cable bends and access to the reading window.

Choose the communication version to match the installation:

  • Single-port Ethernet TCP/IP: serial connectivity is also provided. Blade 100 supports RS-232; Blade 200 adds RS-422 and RS-485 options on its main serial port.
  • Dual-port PROFINET: dedicated versions support PROFINET Conformance Class B for connection to compatible industrial control networks.
  • Dual-port EtherNet/IP: dedicated versions provide two network ports for EtherNet/IP installations.

Single-port versions provide two optocoupled NPN/PNP inputs; dual-port versions provide one. Match the input arrangement to the trigger sensor and control-system requirements before selecting the reader.

The aluminium housing is rated IP65, and the published operating temperature is 0–50°C. Power is supplied at 10–30 VDC. Applications involving freezing temperatures, condensation or aggressive cleaning require an assessment of the environment and any additional protection.

DL.CODE Configuration and Monitoring

Blade uses DL.CODE, the configuration software also used with Datalogic Matrix readers. Standard setup does not require image calibration, but commissioning still includes selecting the applicable focus, enabling barcode types, setting triggers and output formats, and testing labels at production speed.

Configuration backup and restore are available over the network or through the microSD card slot. Embedded WebMonitor provides monitoring access, while WebSentinel Plus offers a separate monitoring-system option. Include any required card, software and integration work in the project scope.

The absence of moving scan components removes that source of mechanical wear. Routine maintenance still includes keeping the reading window clean and checking mounting stability, cables and read performance.

Illustrative Application: Tote Routing

On a conveyor carrying totes with side-mounted 1D labels, a presence sensor can trigger the reader as each tote enters the reading zone. Blade sends the decoded identifier to a PLC, which uses the routing logic configured for the conveyor. The installation should also define what happens after a no-read, such as diverting the tote for manual checking.

Model selection should account for the nearest and furthest label positions, label skew and conveyor speed. A longer maximum reading distance is useful only if the chosen focus also covers the required barcode size and position variation.

When a 2D Reader Is More Suitable

Blade is designed for 1D barcodes. If the application uses Data Matrix or QR codes, consider a 2D-capable Datalogic Matrix 120 configuration for compact machine integration. Its area-imaging format addresses different code and presentation requirements; validate its field of view and working distance independently rather than assuming it matches Blade’s reading envelope.

Integration and Verification Questions

Does successful reading verify barcode print quality?

A successful decode confirms that the reader recovered the encoded data under the test conditions. It does not by itself establish a barcode quality grade or compliance with a customer’s verification specification. If formal grading is required, specify the applicable standard and verification equipment separately.

Can Blade connect directly to a WMS or ERP system?

Ethernet or serial connectivity provides a way to transmit barcode data, but the receiving application must support the chosen protocol and message format. A warehouse management system or ERP integration may require PLC logic, middleware or application development. Define the receiving system and data-handling requirements during selection.

Request a Blade Model Recommendation and Quote

MarvelTech supplies automatic identification equipment and provides system adjustment, inspection and maintenance services. For a Blade project, request a configuration review covering the optical version, interface, mounting arrangement and integration requirements.

Include a barcode sample, narrow-bar width, nearest and furthest reading distances, conveyor speed, label orientation, available mounting space and required PLC or host connection. For a DS2X00 replacement, add the existing reader’s full part number and photographs of its mounting and connectors.

Ask for an itemised quote covering the reader, mounting hardware, cables, power supply, any backup or monitoring accessories, and the installation and support work required. Request confirmation of availability, lead time and applicable warranty terms for the selected configuration.

Datalogic Blade FAQs

When is Datalogic Blade suitable for conveyor and packaging applications?

Blade suits fixed-position reading of 1D labels on totes, cartons and packaging where each barcode passes through a defined reading zone. Selection depends on label position, orientation, size and movement through that zone. For routing or rejection, the reader supplies the decoded identifier; the machine controller must associate it with the correct item and manage unreadable labels.

What is the difference between Blade 100 and Blade 200?

Blade 100 has a published reading-distance envelope of 40–320 mm, while Blade 200 extends to 40–600 mm with near, mid and far focus positions. Blade 100 also offers a dedicated high-resolution version for narrow bars down to 0.10 mm under the specified reading conditions. These limits apply across different configurations and barcode sizes: select using the relevant reading diagram, rather than maximum distance alone.

Can Datalogic Blade read QR codes and Data Matrix?

No. Blade is a 1D reader supporting linear formats including Code 128, GS1-128, EAN/UPC, Code 39 and Interleaved 2 of 5. Its imaging technology does not make it a general-purpose 2D reader. For QR or Data Matrix applications, consider a 2D-capable Datalogic Matrix 120 configuration, checking its working distance and image coverage against the installation.

Can Blade read worn or poorly printed barcode labels?

Blade’s image-based decoding can help with worn, faded or poorly printed 1D labels, but suitability depends on the remaining barcode detail and contrast. It uses solid-state imaging without a moving laser scan mechanism. Test representative difficult labels at the intended speed and mounting angle. Successful decoding confirms that data was recovered; it does not establish a formal barcode print-quality grade.

Can Blade replace an existing Datalogic DS2100 or DS2400 scanner?

Datalogic positions Blade 100 for DS2100 replacement and Blade 200 for DS2400 replacement, with mechanical compatibility intended to simplify migration. Check the full legacy part number, reading window, bracket, connector pinout, supply and communication protocol before ordering. Plan to configure and validate the replacement in DL.CODE; compatible mounting dimensions alone do not establish that wiring or existing configuration files can be reused unchanged.

Does Blade’s 270-frame/s rate determine the maximum conveyor speed?

No. The published 270 frames per second describes image acquisition, rather than successfully identified products per second. Usable conveyor speed depends on exposure time, barcode orientation, label quality and how long the code remains in the reading zone. Provide both belt speed and item spacing, and validate decoding and result delivery before the item reaches its routing or rejection point.

Which Blade version should I choose for PROFINET, EtherNet/IP or serial communication?

Select the communication variant required by the controller. Blade offers dedicated dual-port PROFINET and dual-port EtherNet/IP versions, alongside single-port Ethernet TCP/IP versions with serial connectivity. On the single-port versions, Blade 100 provides RS-232, while Blade 200 adds RS-422 and RS-485 options on its main serial port. Confirm the exact part number, trigger inputs and required message format before specifying cables or PLC integration.

What mounting space, power supply and accessories does Blade require?

Blade requires a 10–30 VDC supply and a mounting arrangement matched to its front-reading or side-reading version. Allow space for M12 connectors, cable bends and access to clean the reading window. Ask for the bracket, interface and power cables, power supply and any microSD card to be itemised in the quotation so the installation requirements and supplied components are explicit.

Is Blade suitable for cold stores or washdown areas?

Blade’s published operating range is 0–50°C, and its housing is rated IP65. Sub-zero cold stores fall outside that temperature range, while IP65 alone does not establish suitability for high-pressure cleaning, hot washdown or cleaning chemicals. Describe temperature changes, condensation and cleaning exposure during selection so any enclosure or environmental protection can be assessed alongside the reading geometry.

What setup does Blade need in DL.CODE?

Blade uses Datalogic DL.CODE for configuration. Standard installation does not require image calibration, but commissioning still involves selecting the applicable focus setting, enabling the required barcode formats, configuring triggers and defining output data. Test normal labels, difficult samples and unreadable items under production conditions so the controller receives and handles each result as intended.

Can Blade be monitored remotely and backed up for replacement?

Yes. Blade provides embedded WebMonitor and supports configuration backup and restore over the network or through its microSD card slot. Datalogic also identifies connectivity to WebSentinel Plus for broader monitoring. Specify any required card and confirm the software, licensing and deployment scope for central monitoring separately. Keep a validated configuration backup and record the reader’s optical and interface version.

What information should I send Marveltech for a Blade quotation?

Send barcode samples, the smallest bar width, nearest and furthest label positions, conveyor speed, label orientation, mounting space and PLC or host protocol. Include environmental conditions, quantity and the existing part number for replacements. Request an itemised equipment quote, confirmed lead time and the required setup or support scope; Marveltech’s equipment adjustment and maintenance services can inform that discussion.
