BIXOLON XT3-40 Industrial Label Printer

The XT3-40 combines an all-metal housing, side-loading supplies and a 2.4-inch colour LCD for use at packing benches, production cells and warehouse workstations. Its capacity for 450 m ribbons and label rolls up to 203 mm in diameter suits operations where frequent consumable changes interrupt printing.

Both resolution models support direct thermal and thermal transfer printing. Choose the print method around the label’s required life, then select the resolution, interfaces and handling accessories for your workflow.

Compact Housing with Accessible Media Loading

The double-folding side door reduces the space needed to open the printer, while the side-loading path gives operators access to labels and ribbons. The printhead and roller support maintenance without tools.

The standard printer measures 240 × 430.5 × 276.7 mm (W × D × H) and weighs 9.3 kg. The factory-installed rewinder configuration increases the height to 326.7 mm and weight to 11.88 kg. Allow additional clearance for loading supplies, connecting cables and servicing the printer.

XT3-40 or XT3-43: Choose Resolution and Speed

The XT3-40 prioritises speed for general barcode and dispatch labels. The XT3-43 provides more dots per inch for finer print detail, with a lower maximum speed.

Media width and printable width are different: both models accept media up to 114 mm wide, but the printed design must fit within the model’s print width. Maximum speeds are hardware limits; test your label material, ribbon, layout and darkness setting at the intended production speed.

The BIXOLON XT3-40 specification brochure includes the media requirements, interface configurations and accessory options for both models.

Choose the Print Method and Consumables

Direct Thermal for Short-Life Labels

Direct thermal printing uses heat-sensitive media without a ribbon. It suits shipping, dispatch and temporary stock labels where the printed information only needs to last through a defined handling period. Consider exposure to heat, sunlight and friction when selecting the label stock.

Thermal Transfer for Longer-Lasting Identification

Thermal transfer printing uses a ribbon to print onto compatible label material. It suits product, asset, batch and warehouse-location labels that need to remain readable through repeated handling or storage. Resistance to abrasion, chemicals and temperature depends on the matched label and ribbon combination.

  • Media: 20–114 mm wide and 0.06–0.25 mm thick, with roll diameters up to 203 mm and core diameters from 25.4–76.2 mm.
  • Formats: gap, black mark, notch, continuous and fan-fold media, with adjustable transmissive and reflective sensors for label detection.
  • Ribbons: wax, wax/resin or resin; 40–110 mm wide and up to 450 m long, on a 25.4 mm core. Inside- and outside-wound ribbons are supported.
  • Barcodes: supported formats include Code 128, Code 39, EAN-13, GS1 DataBar, QR Code, Data Matrix and PDF417.

For laboratory or healthcare identification, specify the container surface, storage temperature, cleaning chemicals and required label life before choosing consumables. Print resolution alone does not establish suitability for those conditions.

Peeler, Cutter and Liner Take-Up Options

Select the output method according to how operators apply or collect labels.

  • Optional peeler: separates each label from its backing for application.
  • Optional auto cutter: cuts compatible media; confirm the intended material and cut position when specifying this option.
  • Factory-installed rewinder with peeler: collects the backing liner internally, up to a 130 mm roll diameter. This is a liner take-up function, rather than a finished-label roll rewinder.

Include the required handling option in the printer specification, particularly when ordering the factory-installed rewinder.

Standard Interfaces and Wireless Options

USB, USB host, serial and 10/100 Mbps Ethernet are standard. Parallel, dual-band WLAN operating at 2.4 and 5 GHz, and Bluetooth 5.2 are optional, with supported combinations determined by the ordered configuration. USB wireless dongles are not supported.

The printer supports SLCS, BPL-Z and BPL-E command languages. These provide integration routes for compatible applications, but an existing label format should be checked for commands, fonts, barcode sizing and positioning before replacing another printer.

ERP, warehouse management and shipping systems need a compatible driver, print service or application connection to generate print jobs. Ethernet connectivity alone does not establish compatibility with a particular business system.

Label Software and Printer Management

BIXOLON lists Label Artist-II, BarTender UltraLite for BIXOLON, Windows drivers and Linux/macOS CUPS drivers among the available software tools. Android and iOS development tools support application integration; check support for the operating-system version and connection method you intend to use.

For database-driven labels or automated printing, choose label design software around the required data sources, operator workflow and printer count. Confirm the edition and licence scope before assuming that bundled software covers those functions.

Twin Function copies printer settings and data through USB. Optional XPM printer-profile management and the XCM connection application support deployment and configuration tasks; include the required management scope in the enquiry.

Installation Requirements and a Dispatch Example

The XT3-40 uses an internal power supply with a 100–240 V AC, 50–60 Hz input. Its specified operating range is 5–40°C and 10–80% relative humidity. A cold-store printing location below 5°C falls outside that temperature range.

Illustrative dispatch setup: for 100 × 150 mm paper shipping labels with a short service life, an XT3-40 connected by Ethernet can use direct thermal media without a ribbon. Configure the application for the 203 dpi printer, set the label dimensions, position the sensor for the media and calibrate label detection. Check the printed barcode with the scanner used at dispatch, then adjust speed and darkness if necessary.

For smaller component labels containing dense Data Matrix codes or fine text, evaluate the XT3-43 using an actual label sample. Confirm readability at the required size and production speed before selecting the model.

When the XD5-40t Desktop Printer May Be Sufficient

The BIXOLON XD5-40t desktop label printer is a smaller alternative when bench space matters more than internal consumable capacity. At 203 dpi, it supports up to 6 ips, 300 m ribbons and internal media rolls up to 127 mm in diameter, compared with the XT3-40’s 8 ips, 450 m ribbons and 203 mm rolls.

Both support direct thermal and thermal transfer printing. Choose the XT3-40 when its larger supplies, metal housing and standard Ethernet suit the workstation; consider the XD5-40t when its smaller body and lower capacities meet the workload. A layout wider than the XT3 model’s printable area requires a wider printer or a revised label design.

BIXOLON XT3-40 FAQs

Which labelling applications suit the BIXOLON XT3-40?

The XT3-40 suits shipping, carton, inventory, product and manufacturing traceability labels at warehouse and production workstations. Its larger consumable capacity is useful where frequent roll changes interrupt printing. Assess your busiest print batch, label dimensions and required durability before selecting it; daily label volume alone does not establish whether the printer will meet peak demand.

Should I choose the XT3-40 at 203 dpi or XT3-43 at 300 dpi?

Choose the XT3-40 for general labelling at up to 8 ips (203 mm/s), or evaluate the XT3-43 for smaller text and finer barcode detail at up to 6 ips (152 mm/s). Test your smallest printed elements at the intended speed. Higher resolution does not compensate for unsuitable media, incorrect barcode dimensions or insufficient clear space around a code.

When is the XT3-40 preferable to the BIXOLON XD5-40t?

The XT3-40 is preferable when larger supplies and a metal housing justify its greater installation space. It accepts 203 mm media rolls and 450 m ribbons, compared with 127 mm rolls and 300 m ribbons on the original BIXOLON XD5-40t desktop label printer. Compare replenishment frequency and bench space using your actual consumables; the XD5-40II is a separate generation.

Does the XT3-40 need a ribbon for every label?

No. Both the XT3-40 and XT3-43 support direct thermal printing on heat-sensitive labels without a ribbon, and thermal transfer printing with a ribbon. Direct thermal can suit short-life dispatch labels. For longer-lasting identification, select a compatible thermal transfer label and ribbon combination, then assess its resistance to the actual heat, chemicals, sunlight or abrasion the label will encounter.

Can the XT3-40 print across a 114 mm-wide label?

No. Both models accept media from 20–114 mm wide, but maximum printable width is 108 mm on the XT3-40 and 105.7 mm on the XT3-43. Media width includes the backing liner. Check that the complete artwork, including barcode clear margins, fits inside the printable area; a roll fitting the printer does not mean its full width can be printed.

Which thermal transfer ribbons fit the XT3-40?

The XT3-40 supports wax, wax/resin and resin ribbons, inside- or outside-wound, from 40–110 mm wide and up to 450 m long on a 25.4 mm core. Match ribbon chemistry to the label surface and durability requirement. When reusing existing supplies, check their dimensions and winding direction as well as print quality at the intended speed and darkness setting.

Does the XT3-40 rewinder collect finished labels or backing liner?

The optional factory-installed rewinder with peeler collects backing liner internally, up to a 130 mm roll diameter; it does not rewind finished labels into a roll. A separate optional peeler presents labels for application, while an optional auto cutter separates compatible media. Specify how labels will be collected or applied, and confirm cutter suitability for the proposed material before ordering.

Are Ethernet, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth standard on the XT3-40?

Ethernet, USB, USB host and serial are standard. Dual-band WLAN and Bluetooth 5.2 are optional, with the available interface combinations determined by the ordered configuration. Specify your required connection when requesting a quote; USB wireless dongles are not supported. For wireless installations, provide the network requirements and host device so compatibility can be checked before deployment.

Can the XT3-40 replace an existing printer in an ERP or WMS workflow?

It can be considered where the application supports its driver or SLCS, BPL-Z or BPL-E command languages. Confirm compatibility using representative print jobs, including fonts, graphics, barcode sizing and label positioning. Enterprise resource planning and warehouse management systems still need a configured printing connection; Ethernet access alone does not establish software compatibility or preserve an existing label layout.

What label software can I use with the XT3-40?

BIXOLON lists Label Artist-II and BarTender UltraLite for BIXOLON among the XT3-40 software tools. Confirm the supplied edition before assuming database connections or automated printing are included. For labels populated from product, batch or order records, compare label design and printing software against the required data sources, operator controls and printer count, with licence costs specified separately.

Can the XT3-40 operate inside a cold store?

Only if the printing location remains within BIXOLON’s specified operating range of 5–40°C and 10–80% relative humidity. Printing below 5°C falls outside that range. Distinguish the printer’s operating conditions from the label’s service conditions: printing outside a cold store still requires a label, adhesive and ribbon combination suitable for the application temperature, storage temperature and condensation exposure.

What should I provide when requesting an XT3-40 quotation?

Send label dimensions, sample artwork, material and durability requirements, daily volume and the busiest print batch. Include your operating system, existing software, connection method, installation conditions and any peeler, cutter or liner take-up requirement. Request an itemised quote covering the resolution model, consumables, software licences and delivery timing. If required, ask which equipment maintenance and support services cover the proposed installation.
