T800 Desktop Label Printing: Resolution and Output

The T800 combines a double-wall clamshell housing with Printronix System Architecture, the control platform shared with Printronix industrial printers. Its 3.5-inch colour LCD and nine-key control panel provide access to media calibration, printer settings and troubleshooting functions.

The series includes the T820 at 203 dpi and the T830 at 300 dpi. Resolution, measured in dots per inch, affects how much detail the printer can reproduce within a given label area.

T800 resolution options and maximum print speeds
Specification T820 T830
Print resolution 203 dpi 300 dpi
Maximum print speed 203 mm/s / 8 ips 152 mm/s / 6 ips
Maximum print width 104 mm / 4.1 inches 104 mm / 4.1 inches
Selection priority Shipping, carton and product labels where the required detail is achievable at 203 dpi Smaller text, finer graphics and denser barcode layouts that require additional detail

Maximum speeds depend on suitable media, ribbon and print settings. The manufacturer’s updated datasheet states a duty cycle of 2,500 labels per day; assess the actual workload using label length, batch frequency, print coverage and any RFID encoding or dispensing requirements.

Thermal Transfer, Direct Thermal and Consumables

Thermal transfer printing uses a ribbon matched to the label material. Wax, wax/resin and resin ribbons are supported, allowing material combinations to be selected for product identification, asset labels and applications requiring resistance to handling or environmental exposure. Durability depends on the complete label-and-ribbon combination.

Direct thermal printing uses heat-sensitive labels without a ribbon. It suits temporary identification and shipping workflows where the label’s required life and exposure conditions are compatible with the chosen thermal material.

  • Media: roll-fed or fan-fold labels, tags, paper, film and tickets, with gap or black-mark sensing.
  • Media width: 20–112 mm; the printable area remains limited to 104 mm.
  • Media thickness: 0.06–0.19 mm.
  • Internal roll capacity: up to 127 mm outside diameter, with 25.4 mm or 38.1 mm media cores.
  • Ribbon capacity: up to 300 m long and 25.4–110 mm wide.

The 300 m ribbon capacity reduces ribbon changes compared with using shorter ribbons of the same type. Label-roll changes remain a separate consideration when planning longer batches.

Optional UHF RFID Printing and Encoding

The RFID configuration prints visible label information and writes data to a compatible passive RAIN UHF RFID inlay, the chip-and-antenna assembly inside the label. It supports GS1 EPC Gen2 v2 / ISO 18000-63. RFID is a factory-only option, so specify it when ordering; a standard T800 cannot receive a field-installed RFID upgrade.

An adjustable antenna accommodates different inlay positions. RFID calibration determines the encoding position and power settings, while counters track successfully encoded and overstruck labels. Supported label pitch can be as short as 15.9 mm / 0.625 inches, depending on the inlay; this is not a universal minimum for every RFID label or handling mode.

Specify the installation country, inlay model, label dimensions and required encoded data before selecting the RFID configuration. Reader compatibility and performance on the labelled product also need checking.

The printer prepares labels for a wider tracking workflow. RFID systems additionally require suitable readers, antennas and software to capture events and update inventory or asset records.

Connectivity, Printer Languages and Remote Management

Standard connections include 10/100Base-T Ethernet, USB device, USB host and RS-232 serial. Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n/ac and Bluetooth are optional; specify the required wireless connection and host device in the enquiry.

PrintNet Enterprise supports remote printer monitoring, configuration and firmware management. The printer also provides web-based configuration. These functions manage the printer; label design and business-system connections require a suitable printing application or supported command workflow.

The T800 supports PGL and emulations including ZGL, TGL, IGL, STGL, DGL, IEGL, MGL and EGL. Supported barcode formats include Code 128, Code 39, EAN and UPC, plus QR Code, Data Matrix and PDF417. Check the required commands and barcode implementation in the selected emulation.

When selecting label design software, confirm the T800 driver or command-language support, host operating system and data connection. An RFID workflow also needs software capable of generating the required encoding commands.

Applications and a Practical Setup Example

The T800 suits individual packing benches, retail stockrooms and manufacturing cells producing shipping, product, carton, batch or asset labels. In pharmacy and laboratory workflows, label size, adhesive, storage conditions and exposure to cleaning agents should determine the consumables and print settings.

Illustrative setup: for a packing station printing 100 × 150 mm shipping labels, a 203 dpi T820 is a configuration to assess. Load compatible direct thermal media, select the gap sensor for die-cut labels and run media calibration. Send a representative label from the shipping application, then check positioning, text and barcode readability with the scanners used in the workflow.

This sample check should use the intended production speed. Increasing darkness or speed without checking the printed result can compromise fine text and barcode edges.

Installation Requirements and the T4000 Alternative

The printer measures 210 mm wide × 190 mm high × 285 mm deep. Allow additional clearance to open the clamshell, load consumables and connect cables. Power input is auto-ranging 100–240 VAC, 48–62 Hz.

The specified operating range is 5–40 °C and 25–85% relative humidity, non-condensing. Selected media may impose narrower limits. A workstation below 5 °C or a layout requiring more than 104 mm of print width falls outside these T800 specifications.

Consider the Printronix T4000 industrial label printer when larger consumable supplies and a metal enclosure are priorities. It accommodates 450 m ribbons and 203.2 mm / 8-inch label rolls, compared with the T800’s 300 m ribbons and 127 mm / 5-inch rolls. Those capacities favour longer batches with fewer consumable changes; the T800 remains the desktop option where installation space matters.

T800 Configuration Questions

Can the T800 replace an existing printer without changing label templates?

Its emulations can support replacement projects, but compatibility depends on the commands, fonts, graphics and label dimensions used by the existing system. Supply the current printer model and a representative print file so the proposed configuration can be assessed before deployment.

Can print resolution be changed later?

The manufacturer confirms that the 203 dpi and 300 dpi printheads are interchangeable. A resolution change still requires the appropriate printhead, printer configuration and a review of the label output; layouts or application settings may need adjustment.

What restrictions apply to the peeler and cutter?

Continuous and tear-off operation are standard. Optional peel-and-present handling is specified for paper labels at up to 152 mm/s / 6 ips. The updated datasheet specifies a minimum media length of 25.4 mm for peel-off and cutter operation; cutter media must meet the thickness limits, and the cutter does not support on-metal RFID labels or tags.

Printronix T800 FAQs

Is the Printronix T800 suitable for daily shipping and product labelling?

The T800 suits packing benches, retail stockrooms and manufacturing workstations producing shipping, carton, product and asset labels. The manufacturer’s updated datasheet specifies a duty cycle of 2,500 labels per day. Assess your largest batch as well as daily volume: label length, print coverage, consumable changes and optional RFID encoding affect how quickly a job finishes.

What is the difference between the Printronix T820 and T830?

The T820 prints at 203 dpi, with a maximum speed of 203 mm/s; the T830 provides 300 dpi at up to 152 mm/s. Both have a 104 mm maximum print width. Choose according to the smallest text and barcode elements in your artwork. The T830 provides finer detail, but barcode readability still depends on layout, consumables and print settings.

Should I use direct thermal or thermal transfer printing on the T800?

Both methods are supported. Direct thermal uses heat-sensitive labels without a ribbon and suits temporary identification where exposure and label life permit. Thermal transfer uses a ribbon and is a candidate for longer-lasting product or asset labels. Select the label material and wax, wax/resin or resin ribbon together, based on abrasion, heat, chemicals and storage conditions.

What label sizes and rolls fit the T800?

The T800 accepts media 20–112 mm wide and 0.06–0.19 mm thick, with a maximum printable width of 104 mm. Internal rolls can reach 127 mm outside diameter. Check the complete stock specification, including backing width, core size and label spacing. A roll fitting inside the printer does not establish that the artwork or dispensing method is compatible.

Does the T800 support RFID, and can it be added later?

RFID is a factory-only option; a non-RFID T800 cannot receive a field-installed RFID upgrade. The RFID configuration prints and encodes compatible passive RAIN UHF labels using GS1 EPC Gen2 / ISO 18000-63. Specify the inlay, label dimensions, encoding format and installation country when ordering. For subsequent tracking, RFID systems also require suitable readers and application software.

Can the T800 cut labels or present them individually for application?

Optional cutter and peel-and-present accessories support these workflows. The peeler is specified for paper labels at up to 152 mm/s, while both options require a minimum media length of 25.4 mm according to the updated datasheet. Cutter media must meet the specified thickness limits; on-metal RFID labels and tags are excluded. Identify the stock and handling method before selecting an accessory.

Which T800 connections are standard, and is wireless printing optional?

Ethernet 10/100Base-T, USB device, USB host and RS-232 serial are standard. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are optional. Specify the host device, operating system and network security requirements when selecting wireless connectivity. A supported connection provides the communication path; the application must also send a compatible print job through an appropriate driver or printer command language.

Can the T800 replace an existing printer without rebuilding label templates?

Its printer-language emulations can support migration, but compatibility depends on the commands, fonts, graphics and resolution used by the existing system. Provide the current printer model and a representative print file for assessment. When choosing label design and printing software, check T800 driver support, data connections and any RFID encoding or licence requirements before deployment.

Can multiple T800 printers be monitored and configured remotely?

Yes. PrintNet Enterprise supports remote printer monitoring, configuration and firmware management. SOTI Connect is another supported management option and requires a separate licence. These tools manage devices; label design and business-system integration remain separate requirements. For a fleet deployment, define who needs access, which alerts matter and how printers will connect to the management system.

Can the T800 operate in a cold warehouse or confined workstation?

The specified operating range is 5–40 °C and 25–85% relative humidity, non-condensing; printing below 5 °C falls outside that range. Selected media may impose narrower limits. The printer measures 210 × 190 × 285 mm, but installation needs additional clearance for the clamshell, consumable loading and cables. Check workstation conditions separately from the conditions the finished label will encounter.

When should I choose the Printronix T4000 instead of the T800?

Consider the Printronix T4000 industrial label printer when longer batches and larger consumable supplies justify a larger machine. Its metal enclosure accommodates 203.2 mm label rolls and 450 m ribbons, compared with the T800’s 127 mm rolls and 300 m ribbons. Both provide 104 mm maximum print width, so the T4000’s larger housing does not provide a wider printable area.

What information should I provide for a T800 quotation?

Send sample artwork, label dimensions and material, daily volume, largest batch, current software and required connection through the enquiry form. Include printer quantity, installation country, operating conditions and any cutter, peeler or RFID requirements. Ask for a quotation that identifies the exact configuration, consumables, software licences and agreed services, with availability, delivery timing and warranty terms confirmed.
