Choose the Scan Engine for Your Working Distance

The Skorpio X5 combines an Android computer with a dedicated barcode reader. Select the scan engine according to your barcode formats, smallest labels and working distances; the engines are different hardware configurations.

  • Linear imager: for 1D barcodes, including common product and shipping codes. Choose a 2D configuration if your workflow includes QR Code or Data Matrix.
  • Standard Range 2D imager: for nearby product, parcel and shelf labels during receiving, stock counting and packing.
  • Mid-Range 2D imager: for workflows requiring more reach than Standard Range, such as scanning stock on shelves.
  • Extra Long Range 2D imager: for mixed close and distant scanning. Datalogic specifies a maximum reach of up to 20 m; achievable distance depends on barcode size, type, contrast, condition and reading conditions.

The 2D configurations support formats including QR Code, Data Matrix and PDF417. Test representative labels at both the nearest and farthest required distances, including damaged examples or labels behind stretch wrap. The maximum XLR distance does not apply to every barcode.

Physical Keys, Touchscreen and Handling Options

The handheld configuration suits tasks that alternate between scanning, carrying the device and entering data. A pistol grip provides a trigger for repeated scanning during picking, receiving and stock movements.

Choose numeric keys for quantity entry, function-numeric keys for application shortcuts, or an alphanumeric layout for mixed identifiers. The touchscreen supports gloves and a compatible stylus, but operators should test their actual gloves and application screens before rollout.

Battery Replacement and Charging Choices

Hot-swap battery technology supports battery replacement without a full device restart when the prescribed procedure is followed. Plan spare batteries and charging capacity around the shift pattern; runtime depends on scanning frequency, wireless activity, screen use, battery condition and temperature.

Choose between models equipped for 15 W wireless charging and models using physical pogo-pin charging contacts. Wireless charging requires the matching device and dock configuration. For docked Ethernet communication, specify the compatible contact-based hardware.

Single-slot docks, multi-slot docks, spare-battery chargers, grips and protective boots are configuration-dependent accessories. Include the required power supplies and regional power cords when defining the equipment package.

Applications and System Integration

The Skorpio X5 suits workflows where operators repeatedly scan labels and enter quantities or identifiers. Typical uses include warehouse receiving and picking, retail replenishment and online order fulfilment, manufacturing kitting and traceability, and healthcare stock or pharmacy logistics.

Connection to a warehouse management system (WMS), enterprise resource planning system (ERP) or production platform requires a compatible application, browser workflow or terminal-emulation client. Confirm the supported Android version, barcode input method, keyboard mapping, authentication and software licences with the application provider.

Illustrative configuration: a picker scans a bin location, scans the product and enters a quantity using the numeric keypad. The WMS application checks these entries against the order. Standard Range may suit nearby labels; elevated rack labels justify testing Mid-Range or XLR using the actual label sizes and operator positions.

Wi-Fi roaming support includes 802.11r/k/v, but performance also depends on access-point configuration and coverage. Test active application sessions along picking routes, loading areas and other coverage boundaries before deploying the fleet.

Skorpio X5 or Skorpio X40?

The Skorpio X5 is worth assessing when physical keys, its 4.3-inch display and the available scanning configurations match an established Android workflow. Its highest supported Android version is 13.

For a new deployment requiring Android 15 or Wi-Fi 6E, compare the newer Skorpio X40. Datalogic lists X40 configurations with those features and a 4-inch display, compared with the X5’s 4.3-inch display and Wi-Fi 5 connectivity. Recheck application behaviour, scanning requirements and accessory part numbers when changing platforms.

MarvelTech’s range of rugged mobile computers provides broader options when screen size, connectivity or operating-system requirements favour another device.

Skorpio X5 Buying Questions

Which Android version should be specified, and are updates included?

Earlier Skorpio X5 configurations shipped with Android 10, while Datalogic now provides Android 13 firmware. Specify the installed operating system and whether Google Mobile Services are required when requesting a quote. Android 14 and 15 upgrades are not supported on this platform.

Datalogic requires active Shield coverage for firmware downloads. Ask whether the quoted service agreement includes Shield, its duration and the applicable security-update terms. Hardware purchase alone should not be treated as confirmation of update entitlement.

Can the Skorpio X5 work beyond warehouse Wi-Fi coverage?

The X5 has no integrated cellular connection. Work outside Wi-Fi coverage therefore depends on the application’s offline capabilities or a separately provided network connection. Confirm how transactions are stored, synchronised and reconciled after connectivity returns.

Is it suitable for frequent cleaning in healthcare environments?

Its use in healthcare logistics does not establish compatibility with every disinfectant. Datalogic’s cleaning instructions specify a soft cloth lightly dampened with water or 70% isopropyl alcohol and exclude other cleaning agents and abrasive pads. Check these instructions against your facility’s cleaning procedure before selecting the device.

Request a Skorpio X5 Configuration and Quote

MarvelTech can help select the scan engine, keypad, handling configuration, batteries and accessories for your workflow. The quote should identify the device part numbers, quantities, charging equipment, software licences and any agreed configuration, integration or support work.

Send your application name and version, barcode samples, minimum and maximum scanning distances, shift length, Wi-Fi environment and number of devices required. Include grip, keypad and charging preferences where known, and request confirmation of availability, lead time, warranty and support coverage for the proposed package.

Datalogic Skorpio X5 FAQs

When is the Datalogic Skorpio X5 suitable for warehouse picking and inventory?

The Skorpio X5 suits workflows combining repeated barcode scanning with physical-key entry, including picking, receiving, stock counts and manufacturing kitting. Assess how often operators enter quantities, location codes or function commands. Its keypad is particularly relevant to these tasks; compare other rugged mobile computers if your application prioritises larger touchscreen forms.

Which Skorpio X5 scan engine should I choose?

Choose the linear imager for 1D-only workflows, or a 2D imager when QR Code, Data Matrix or PDF417 is required. Standard Range suits nearby labels; Mid-Range and Extra Long Range provide additional reach. These are hardware configurations, so specify the smallest barcode, nearest reading position and farthest target before ordering rather than selecting solely by maximum distance.

Can the Skorpio X5 XLR read every barcode from 20 metres?

No. Datalogic specifies up to 20 m for a 100 mil Code 128 barcode, whose narrowest bars are 2.54 mm wide. Smaller or different codes have shorter reading ranges. Test actual rack and pallet labels from the intended operator position, including close-range scans, poor print quality and stretch-wrap reflections. The headline distance is not a universal working range.

Does the Skorpio X5 XLR include NFC and a rear camera?

The XLR version does not include NFC or the separate 13 MP rear camera listed for non-XLR configurations. It can capture images through its scan engine, but this is a different capability from a dedicated photographic camera. If your workflow needs contactless badge reading or detailed damage photographs, assess those requirements alongside scanning distance before selecting XLR.

Which keypad and handling configuration is best for frequent scanning?

Choose the 28-key numeric layout for quantity entry, 38-key function-numeric layout for application shortcuts, or 47-key alphanumeric layout for mixed letters and numbers. A pistol grip provides a trigger for repetitive scanning. Trial the complete configuration with its battery and protective accessories: reach to the keys, balance and carrying method matter alongside scanning speed.

Which Android version should I specify for the Skorpio X5?

Specify Android 13 and confirm application compatibility before deployment. Datalogic currently lists Android 13 support as active and Android 10 and 11 support as expired. Confirm whether Google Mobile Services are required, the installed firmware and the remaining support period. Datalogic Shield provides software maintenance under its contract terms and is included with applicable EASEOFCARE coverage; request explicit confirmation in the quotation.

Will the Skorpio X5 work with our existing WMS or ERP system?

It can connect through a compatible Android application, browser workflow or terminal-emulation client, but compatibility requires checking your specific software. Confirm barcode input formatting, function-key mapping, authentication and supported Android versions. Test a complete transaction, including error handling, before rollout. Warehouse management system (WMS), enterprise resource planning (ERP) and terminal-emulation licences should be identified separately in the proposed package.

Can the Skorpio X5 work outside warehouse Wi-Fi coverage?

The Skorpio X5 has no integrated cellular connection, so work beyond Wi-Fi coverage requires application-supported offline operation or a separate network connection. Within the facility, test roaming between access points while transactions remain active. If built-in mobile connectivity is essential, compare the cellular configuration of the Datalogic Memor 11, while reassessing keypad and scanning requirements.

Can operators change the Skorpio X5 battery during a shift?

Yes. The Skorpio X5 supports hot-swappable batteries with typical capacities of 3500 mAh or 6200 mAh. Follow the prescribed replacement procedure and test how your application handles the interruption, particularly during an unsubmitted transaction. Select battery capacity and spare quantities using measured shift consumption; scanning frequency, screen brightness, wireless activity and temperature affect runtime.

What is the difference between wireless and contact charging versions?

Wireless-charging models support 15 W charging through compatible docks, while contact-based models use pogo-pin connectors. Docked Gigabit Ethernet requires the compatible contact-based device and three-slot dock combination. Specify device and dock part numbers together, including power supplies and regional cords. Size spare-battery charging capacity separately, and check grip and protective-boot compatibility with the selected standard or XLR body.

Is the Skorpio X5 suitable for cold or wet warehouse environments?

The specified operating range is -20 to +50 °C, with IP65 protection against dust and water jets. These ratings do not establish suitability for immersion, pressure washing or repeated freezer-to-warm-area transitions. Assess condensation exposure, battery performance and cleaning chemicals against the intended workflow. Charging has separate temperature requirements, so include the charging location when defining the operating environment.

What information should I provide for a Skorpio X5 quotation?

Provide device quantities, application name and version, representative barcodes, minimum and maximum scanning distances, shift length and operating conditions. Include keypad, grip, battery and charging preferences, plus any existing accessory part numbers. Ask the quotation to itemise hardware, software licences, configuration work and support coverage, with confirmation of availability, lead time and the proposed Android version.
