The Datalogic P2x-Series is an industrial machine vision smart camera for automated quality inspection, dimensional measurement, assembly verification, printed-text reading and robot guidance. Onboard IMPACT processing, monochrome or colour imaging and configurable optics allow manufacturers to build inspection stations around the component, available space and production cycle.
The P2x combines image capture and inspection processing in one industrial housing. It runs configured vision programs directly on the camera, supporting production tasks such as locating components, checking dimensions and verifying packaging without a separate vision processor.
This architecture suits inspection points where one camera can capture the required features. If several viewpoints need central processing, consider a Datalogic MX-E Series vision processor with supported GigE cameras; its camera capacity depends on the processor model.
The IMPACT software platform provides more than 100 inspection tools for locating, measuring, counting and identifying features. Tools can be combined within a job, allowing the camera to locate a moving component before checking its dimensions, orientation or printed information.
Optical character recognition (OCR) reads printed characters such as batch numbers and expiry dates. Colour models add image information needed for tasks such as checking wire colours, packaging variants or colour-coded components.
The software configuration affects which algorithms are available:

The P2x supports Micro Video and C-Mount configurations. Micro Video lenses are available in 6, 8, 12.5 and 17.5 mm focal lengths. C-Mount models provide additional lens choices, including suitable telecentric optics for measurement applications where changes in object distance would otherwise affect apparent size.
Choose the lens around the field of view—the area captured in the image—and the working distance between the camera and component. Focus adjustment is mechanical; changing a lens or mounting position requires the inspection setup to be checked again.
Illumination options include compact 14-LED and larger 36-LED modules in white, red, blue or infrared. These are configuration choices, and the 36-LED assembly requires the appropriate adapter for the selected lens mount.
Optical filters and polarising covers can improve contrast on reflective surfaces. For colour inspection, assess white illumination and colour-preserving filters with representative parts. Coloured or infrared lighting changes how surface colours appear and should be selected for a defined inspection purpose.
The illuminator modules incorporate a configurable 360° multicolour indicator. IMPACT can assign colours to inspection results, giving nearby operators a visible pass/fail indication.
With a compatible IMPACT release, Smart Camera Monitor provides browser access to inspection results, statistics and image diagnostics. Inspection programs are configured in Vision Program Manager; browser monitoring serves a separate operator-interface function.
The range contains four core imaging variants, each offered in Micro Video and C-Mount configurations. Select monochrome for inspections based on contrast, shape or edges, and colour when distinguishing colours is part of the acceptance criteria.
| Model | Resolution | Image type |
|---|---|---|
| P20M | qHD: 960 × 540 pixels | Monochrome |
| P20C | qHD: 960 × 540 pixels | Colour |
| P22M | 2 MP: 1920 × 1080 pixels | Monochrome |
| P22C | 2 MP: 1920 × 1080 pixels | Colour |
At the same field of view, a 2 MP model provides twice as many pixels across each image dimension as a qHD model. This gives small features more image detail, but achievable measurement accuracy also depends on the lens, calibration, contrast, focus and mechanical stability.
The published lens table gives an approximately 155 × 87 mm field of view for an 8 mm Micro Video lens at a 200 mm working distance. Across that width, a P22 model samples approximately 0.081 mm per pixel, compared with 0.161 mm per pixel for a P20 model.
These figures describe image sampling, rather than a validated measurement tolerance. Test acceptable and defective samples, including borderline defects, before selecting the final resolution and inspection thresholds.
The Datasensing P3x smart camera range includes the same qHD and 2 MP resolutions and adds 5 MP C-Mount models at 2560 × 1936 pixels. Consider the 5 MP option when the required field of view leaves too few pixels on the smallest feature with P2x. Compare complete inspection jobs at the intended exposure and lighting settings before choosing a camera for throughput.
| Requirement | Specification |
|---|---|
| Sensor frame rate | 60 frames/s in the P2x technical data; completed inspection rate depends on the job. |
| Network and serial interfaces | Gigabit Ethernet and RS-232, with serial rates from 2400 to 115200 bit/s. |
| Communication protocols | TCP/IP, EtherNet/IP, PROFINET IO, Modbus TCP and MC protocol. |
| Digital I/O | Two inputs, including an external trigger; three NPN/PNP outputs. Output 3 shares the external strobe function. |
| Power supply | 24 V DC ±10%; maximum consumption of 10 W with 14-LED illumination or 15 W with 36-LED illumination. |
| Operating environment | -10°C to 50°C; up to 90% relative humidity, non-condensing; IP65/IP67 protection. |
| Micro Video dimensions with heat sink | 14-LED configuration: 108.7 × 54 × 62.5 mm; 36-LED configuration: 115.5 × 126 × 77.3 mm, H × W × L. |
The sensor frame rate does not establish how many complete inspections the camera can perform each second. Exposure, image processing, tool selection and result communication determine the usable cycle time.
Output isolation depends on the connection arrangement: outputs 1 and 2 are optically isolated through a CBX500 or CBX800, while output 3 requires a CBX800 for isolation. Output 3 is available as a digital output only when the external strobe is disabled. Include the connection box, cables and external lighting requirements in the integration specification.
Allow space for the selected lens cover, connectors and cable routing; C-Mount dimensions differ from the Micro Video examples above. The protection rating depends on correct assembly of covers and connections. Assess cleaning chemicals and pressure-wash exposure separately.
P2x suits applications that combine several inspection tools or require control over optics and lighting. A simpler vision sensor may be sufficient for a single presence or orientation check. Hidden defects, obstructed features and requirements for three-dimensional depth measurement call for a different inspection arrangement.
IMPACT configuration files can transfer between supported vision devices. Check the software version, licensed tools, image resolution and I/O assignments on the destination hardware, then repeat calibration and application validation before production use.
IMPACT supports text and barcode-reading tools. Supply the exact 1D or 2D symbology, smallest code feature, print method and representative samples for assessment. Reading a code and grading its print quality are separate requirements; specify grading explicitly if it is needed.
MarvelTech can review the inspection task and help select the camera, lens, illumination, filters and integration arrangement. Quote requirements depend on the imaging variant, optical accessories, software licence, cabling, connection hardware and any agreed installation or support work.

P2x suits checks on visible features, including component presence, assembly orientation, dimensions, packaging and printed information. It processes inspections onboard, making it useful where one view captures the required features. Selection depends on whether acceptable variation can be distinguished from defects within the production cycle. For several views requiring shared processing, consider a Datalogic MX-E Series vision processor with compatible cameras.
P20M and P20C provide 960 × 540 pixels; P22M and P22C provide 1920 × 1080 pixels. M denotes monochrome and C denotes colour. Choose colour when colour differences determine acceptance, and monochrome for contrast-based checks. At the same field of view, P22 provides twice the pixels across each dimension, giving smaller features more detail without establishing measurement accuracy by itself.
Choose the lens around the inspection area, working distance and required tolerance. Micro Video models offer compact optics, while C-Mount models accommodate a wider lens selection, including suitable telecentric lenses that reduce apparent size changes as object distance varies. Measurement performance also depends on calibration, distortion, focus and mounting stability. Validate the complete arrangement against reference parts across the expected positioning range.
P2x can be configured for reflective materials, but lighting geometry and contrast determine feasibility. Its illumination options include 14-LED and 36-LED modules, with filters and polarising covers available for suitable configurations. Test whether reflections obscure the actual defect as the part moves or rotates. For colour inspection, assess white illumination because coloured or infrared light changes the colour information captured.
The standard IMPACT toolset is supplied with P2x, while advanced functions require add-on licences. Datasensing identifies Enhanced as enabling Advanced OCR and Pattern Find, and Professional as adding Pattern Sort for pattern-based classification. Specify the required algorithms in the quotation: having IMPACT installed does not mean every tool is enabled. When reusing a program, check its tool requirements against the destination camera’s licences.
Yes. P2x supports optical character recognition, or OCR, for printed information such as batch numbers and expiry dates. Practical suitability depends on character size, contrast, print variation, surface shape and motion. Supply samples showing the weakest acceptable printing and relevant defects. Reading characters and checking their correctness are separate tasks, so define the expected format or production data used for comparison.
No. The stated 60 frames per second describes image acquisition, while inspection throughput depends on exposure, image processing, the selected tools and result communication. Moving products also require sufficient illumination for an exposure short enough to control blur. Evaluate the complete trigger-to-result sequence with the intended inspection program and allow time for the machine to act on the result.
Consider the Datasensing P3x smart camera when P2x’s maximum 2 MP resolution leaves insufficient detail on the smallest feature, or when the inspection needs more processing capacity. P3x adds 5 MP models alongside qHD and 2 MP options. Compare the complete application at the required speed; a higher-resolution sensor alone does not establish faster inspection or better measurement accuracy.
P2x provides Gigabit Ethernet, RS-232 and digital I/O, with support for EtherNet/IP, PROFINET and Modbus TCP. Installation requires a 24 V DC ±10% supply and suitable power, communication and trigger wiring. Define the controller’s expected result data and timing before configuration. Robot guidance additionally requires calibration between image coordinates and the robot’s coordinate system; locating a feature does not by itself establish robot positioning accuracy.
P2x is specified for −10°C to +50°C operation, up to 90% relative humidity without condensation, and IP65/IP67 protection. The installed assembly must use suitable covers, seals and correctly fitted connections. These ratings do not establish resistance to every cleaning chemical or high-pressure washdown process. Check the actual cleaning regime, condensation risk and mounting conditions before selecting the enclosure and accessories.
Yes. With a compatible IMPACT release, Smart Camera Monitor provides browser access to inspection results, statistics, image diagnostics and configured parameters. Vision Program Manager is used to build the inspection application, while the browser interface supports operation and monitoring. Define which settings operators may change and configure access levels accordingly. The illuminator’s configurable 360° indicator can also show local inspection status.
