Datalogic Lighter MARVIS is industrial laser marking software for creating layouts and checking marked traceability codes with compatible Datalogic laser markers and readers. It combines LIGHTER Suite’s editing and laser control with the licensed MARVIS validation feature for Data Matrix marking, component serialisation and automated Direct Part Marking.
MARVIS stands for Mark Read Verify Integrated Solution. Within LIGHTER Suite, it connects marking and reader configuration so a production station can create a code, read the finished mark and assess its quality against configured acceptance criteria.
The software forms part of an installation built around compatible Datalogic laser marking systems. Material suitability, marking area and cycle time depend on the laser, optics, fixture and reader arrangement; the software alone does not determine these limits.
LIGHTER uses object-oriented configuration: individual layout objects carry their own properties, laser parameters and associated reader settings. Loading a prepared layout retrieves the relevant configuration, making it useful when one station handles several part variants.
The editor supports text, shapes, logos, serial numbers, batch references and date/time fields. Filling patterns define how the laser scans the interior of characters and shapes.
| Capability | Supported content |
|---|---|
| Linear barcodes | Formats include Code 39, Code 128, UPC and EAN. |
| Stacked and matrix codes | Formats include PDF417, Data Matrix, QR Code and Micro QR. |
| Vector imports | DXF, DWG, PLT, PDF, AI and SVG. |
| Bitmap imports | BMP, JPG, PNG and TIFF. |
Test representative artwork in the intended software release. Successful import still requires checking scale, text rendering, curves and filling settings before marking a production part.
Code Quality Training establishes a quality threshold from a Golden Sample, a reference mark selected during setup. Quality Grade Metric Profile (QGP) provides configurable code-quality assessment within the MARVIS workflow.
A successful decode confirms that the reader could read the code under the inspection conditions. It does not, by itself, establish compliance with a customer’s formal verification requirement. Specify the required grading method, lighting, measurement conditions and reporting before defining the acceptance threshold.
Documented reporting tools include a validation statistics dashboard, configurable logs with quality results and code images, and an image-storage pool. Define retention and export requirements when connecting these records to a production traceability system.
Supported architectures include standalone operation using the laser system’s embedded resources and supervisory control over Ethernet. LIGHTER documents Ethernet TCP/IP and EtherNet/IP support; the selected controller and software release determine the interfaces available to the installation.
MARVIS configuration includes IP-address discovery, connection management, a digital output for part selection and a digital input for deferred reader triggering. These signals require suitable wiring and machine logic to coordinate inspection with part handling.
The Project Editor provides an integrated development environment using ECMAScript, the language standard underlying JavaScript. Integrators can customise layout content during operation, create operator interfaces and interact with local or central databases and external devices. Connections to manufacturing execution or enterprise resource planning systems require project-specific data mapping and application logic.
Datalogic LIGHTER Suite provides layout preparation, variable-data handling and laser control. Add MARVIS when the station must also read the finished mark and return inline quality feedback.
| Requirement | Standard LIGHTER Suite | LIGHTER with MARVIS |
|---|---|---|
| Layout editing and laser control | Core software functions. | Uses the same LIGHTER environment. |
| Reading the finished mark | Requires a separate reading arrangement if needed. | Integrated workflow with a supported, configured reader. |
| Inline code-quality feedback | Requires a separate assessment process. | Code Quality Training, quality profiles and validation records. |
| Software entitlement | Included with supported Datalogic laser-marking packages. | Separate MARVIS licence required beyond an applicable trial. |
Standard LIGHTER may meet a logo or text-marking requirement without inline inspection. MARVIS is relevant when a readable traceability code is part of the production acceptance process. Neither option replaces selecting a laser and inspection arrangement suited to the material and required throughput.
For a component-marking cell, an integrator could configure a layout containing a Data Matrix code and matching serial-number text. After marking, a supported reader checks the code using settings associated with that layout, and the machine uses the result to release or divert the part.
During commissioning, test representative surface finishes, part positions and production speeds. Define how the station handles unreadable codes, failed quality checks and interrupted cycles before releasing the configuration for production.
Datalogic’s MARVIS documentation describes integration with its laser markers and MATRIX N-series readers. This does not establish compatibility with every model or firmware version. Provide the full laser-marker and controller details, installed LIGHTER release, reader model and reader firmware for a configuration check.
Reader selection also depends on code size, working distance, field of view, surface reflectivity and lighting. A reader that decodes a sample code may still need a different optical arrangement for reliable inspection at production speed.
Specify the engineering PC separately from the laser system’s embedded controller. Confirm the supported Windows version, computer requirements, installation permissions and network configuration against the selected LIGHTER release before purchasing or upgrading a workstation. Ethernet connectivity should not be treated as browser-based layout editing.
Datalogic lists MARVIS software licence 93ACC1918 separately from standard LIGHTER functionality. Its April 2019 MARVIS brochure describes a 30-day trial and a non-expiring paid licence; confirm current trial availability, activation terms and entitlement for the proposed installation.
Under that documented trial arrangement, expiry disables MARVIS while leaving standard LIGHTER functions available. State the number of laser stations, engineering PCs and installation sites so licence coverage, upgrade rights and support can be specified.
MARVIS is documented as an update option for existing installations, subject to compatible hardware and software. An upgrade assessment should cover the controller, reader, licence, cabling and mounting requirements. Back up layouts, scripts and settings, then validate marking, reading and external communication before resuming production.
MarvelTech supplies laser-marking and automatic-identification equipment and offers equipment, software and system maintenance, periodic inspection and support contracts. For a MARVIS project, agree the required configuration, integration work and service scope in the quotation.

Choose MARVIS when production acceptance requires reading and assessing the code after laser marking. Datalogic LIGHTER Suite provides layout editing and laser control; MARVIS adds integrated reader configuration and inline code validation. The distinction matters for serialised components: generating a Data Matrix code and confirming the quality of the finished mark are separate operations.
Yes. Datalogic lists MARVIS software licence 93ACC1918 separately from standard LIGHTER functionality. Its April 2019 brochure describes a 30-day trial that disables MARVIS at expiry while retaining standard LIGHTER functions. Confirm current trial availability, activation terms and coverage for each proposed station before ordering, particularly when upgrading existing equipment or commissioning several cells.
Yes, MARVIS is documented as an upgrade option for compatible installations. Assessment requires the full laser-marker and controller models, LIGHTER version, and proposed Datalogic MATRIX reader model and firmware. Reader compatibility alone is insufficient: check optics, lighting, mounting, power and cabling. For software upgrades, also confirm workstation requirements and revalidate existing layouts, scripts and machine communication.
It can form part of a suitable installation, but performance depends on the material, mark and reader arrangement. Select the laser source through the available laser marking technologies, then assess code dimensions, surface finish, viewing angle and illumination together. Test representative production parts; a readable mark on one favourable sample does not establish suitability across changing finishes or positions.
Yes. LIGHTER supports Data Matrix generation and variable content such as serial numbers, batch references and date/time fields, while MARVIS adds reading and quality assessment through a supported reader. Define how decoded data will be compared with the expected production record. A readable, well-formed symbol can still contain an incorrect serial number, so content correctness needs its own acceptance rule.
A Golden Sample is a reference mark used to establish the code-quality threshold during training. Select it against an agreed acceptance requirement, then challenge the resulting settings with acceptable production variation and known defective samples. MARVIS also provides a Quality Grade Metric Profile for configurable assessment. Reassess the setup when material finish, optics, illumination or marking parameters change.
A pass result shows that the code met the configured inspection criteria; its suitability as formal verification evidence depends on the complete measurement arrangement. Specify the required standard, grade, lighting conditions and report before selecting equipment. Where a customer requires calibrated verification, confirm that the proposed reader and procedure meet that requirement rather than treating successful decoding as sufficient evidence.
LIGHTER associates layout objects with laser parameters and reader configurations, so loading a prepared layout can retrieve both sets of settings. This helps when different components need different marking and inspection recipes. Physical conditions still matter: a layout change does not reposition fixtures or change external lighting. Validate each recipe with its intended part presentation before production use.
Yes, through the interfaces and application logic supported by the selected installation. LIGHTER documents Ethernet TCP/IP and EtherNet/IP, while its ECMAScript scripting environment supports database interaction and custom workflows. Connecting to a programmable logic controller or manufacturing execution system requires defined data fields, triggers and result handling. Specify what happens if a connection fails after marking but before the result is recorded.
MARVIS provides a digital output for part selection and an input for deferred reader triggering; machine controls and handling equipment must implement the response. Define separate actions for unreadable codes, failed quality checks and missing results. Measure marking, part positioning, image capture, evaluation, communication and release together when assessing throughput, rather than using laser marking time alone.
Documented tools include validation statistics, configurable quality logs and code images. The image-storage pool uses first-in, first-out management, so older images may be replaced as capacity is used. Define which results need permanent retention, how they are associated with individual parts and where they will be exported. Local image buffering should not be treated as a complete long-term traceability archive.
Provide hardware models, software versions, station quantity, sample parts, material finish, code dimensions and required cycle time. Include acceptance criteria, production-data sources and the intended response to failed inspections. Request separate confirmation of licences, readers, accessories and commissioning scope. If ongoing assistance is required, specify the maintenance and support coverage needed through Marveltech’s equipment and software support services.
