Object Detection Across a 69 mm Sensing Area

The CR0/0B-1V detects objects passing through a defined area, making it useful for bags, packages and components that may miss a single sensing point. Choose it when the machine needs a presence or passage signal and the target’s position varies within the controlled height.

Within MarvelTech’s industrial sensors range, this model provides area coverage using one powered sensor and an opposing reflector. Allow mounting space and a clear optical path on both sides of the conveyor or machine opening.

How Polarised Retroreflective Detection Works

The sensor sends light towards the reflector and monitors the returning signal. An object interrupting that light changes the switching output, allowing the machine controller to register its presence or passage.

Polarisation helps distinguish the reflector’s return from light reflected by shiny objects. Reflective packaging and transparent materials still require testing with actual samples; surface finish alone does not establish suitability.

Detection Height, Distance and Minimum Object Size

The 69 mm controlled height describes the monitored area. The 10 mm optical pitch describes the spacing of the optics; it is not a universal minimum detectable object size.

With the RL106G reflector, Datasensing lists minimum detectable object diameters of 3–7 mm at 2 m and 3–16 mm at 4.5 m. These ranges describe condition-dependent detection thresholds, not maximum object sizes. Check the smallest target throughout its possible path at the intended working distance.

For counting applications, each item must produce a distinct interruption followed by a clear gap. Touching or overlapping products can appear as one continuous obstruction.

Teach-In, Blanking and Mounting

Fine and standard teach-in modes adjust sensitivity to the installed optical arrangement. Align the sensor and reflector before teaching, then check detection with representative products at their smallest size and least favourable orientation.

Blanking excludes part of the sensing area from evaluation. This can accommodate a fixed obstruction, such as a guide or bracket, but also reduces the area available for detecting products. Check that every required target still crosses an active part of the field.

The sensor body measures 107 × 20 × 36 mm. Datasensing lists the RL106G reflector and ST151 mounting kit as included accessories for CR0 models; confirm the supplied contents and required M12 connection cable in the quotation.

PLC Connection and Conveyor Speed

The CR0/0B-1V uses a 12–30 V DC supply and an M12 five-pin pigtail connection. It provides separate PNP and NPN transistor outputs with selectable normally open or normally closed switching logic. Match the selected output to the programmable logic controller’s input type and follow the wiring diagram for this exact model.

The maximum switching frequency is 400 Hz. Achievable counting speed also depends on object length, spacing, conveyor speed and the controller’s input filtering and scan time. Check both the detection pulse and the gap between products during commissioning.

Use the output as a control signal for counting, machine sequencing or triggering compatible equipment. Actuators and other loads require an appropriately designed control circuit. For IO-Link communication, review the separate CR0/0I-1V variant.

Practical Conveyor Example

Illustrative application: Small packs leave a packaging machine at slightly different heights. Mount the CR0 so its active area covers the expected pack path, with the reflector opposite. Teach the aligned installation, then pass the smallest pack through the upper, middle and lower parts of the required detection zone at production speed.

Connect the output to the controller’s counting input and check that each pack produces one count. If packs touch, change the product spacing or counting method before relying on the total.

Choosing Between CR0 and Other Area Sensors

If 69 mm does not cover the required path, the CR1/0B-1V is the closest taller variant. It provides a 149 mm controlled height, the same 10 mm optical pitch and PNP/NPN outputs, and a nominal 0.2–4.5 m range with an RL136 reflector. Its maximum switching frequency is 320 Hz, compared with 400 Hz for CR0, so check the timing requirement as well as coverage.

The Datalogic AS1 area sensor is another option when a separate emitter-and-receiver arrangement suits the machine. Its 100 mm models use crossed beams and a PNP output. This changes the mounting, wiring and detection characteristics; compare the selected AS1 variant against the actual object shape and working distance.

Environmental and Application Limits

The aluminium housing and PMMA optical face carry an IP67 protection rating, with an operating temperature range of −10°C to +55°C. For washdown installations, assess cleaning chemicals, water pressure and connector protection separately. Keep the optical surfaces accessible for cleaning and alignment checks.

This model supplies an object-detection signal; it does not report dimensions or identify product defects. Use a safety-rated device and suitable safety controls where the requirement is personnel protection or machine guarding.

When the task requires checking orientation, reading codes or inspecting assembly details, assess machine vision systems against the required inspection. A presence signal alone cannot establish whether a product is correctly assembled.

Datasensing CR0/0B-1V FAQs

When should I choose the Datasensing CR0/0B-1V for object detection?

Choose the CR0/0B-1V when packages or components can pass at different positions within its 69 mm sensing height, making a single sensing point insufficient. It provides a switching signal for presence checks, counting or machine sequencing. It does not report object dimensions, read printed registration marks or establish whether an assembly is complete.

What is the smallest object the CR0/0B-1V can detect?

The detection limit depends on the optical arrangement and working distance. Datasensing lists minimum detectable diameters of 3–7 mm at 2 m and 3–16 mm at 4.5 m with the RL106G reflector. The 10 mm optical pitch describes beam spacing, not measurement accuracy. Validate the smallest target throughout its expected path rather than treating 3 mm as a universal detection limit.

What changes if I choose the CR1/0B-1V instead?

The CR1/0B-1V increases the controlled height from 69 mm to 149 mm while retaining 10 mm optical pitch and PNP/NPN outputs. Its nominal 0.2–4.5 m range uses an RL136 reflector. Datasensing lists 320 Hz switching for CR1, compared with 400 Hz for CR0. Choose according to the required coverage, then check minimum object detection and timing separately.

How does the CR0/0B-1V differ from the Datalogic AS1?

The CR0 uses one powered sensor facing a passive reflector, while the Datalogic AS1 area sensor uses separate powered emitter and receiver units with crossed beams. Listed AS1 models provide 100 mm coverage and PNP output. Compare the available wiring on both sides, target shape, sensing distance and selected model’s detection limits; greater coverage alone does not establish better suitability.

Can the CR0/0B-1V detect shiny packaging or transparent objects?

Shiny packaging is a relevant application for polarised retroreflective detection, but transparent targets require specific assessment. Polarisation helps distinguish the reflector’s return from reflections off an object; it does not establish reliable detection of clear film or glass. Test representative samples at the intended distance, including seams, labels and changing orientations that could alter the switching signal.

Does the 400 Hz switching frequency mean 400 products per second?

No. The 400 Hz specification describes sensor switching capability; achievable counting throughput also depends on product length, spacing, conveyor speed and controller input processing. Each item must create a detectable interruption followed by a detectable clear interval. Touching products may produce one continuous signal. Check the shortest object pulse and smallest gap against the sensor timing and PLC input filtering.

It connects to compatible PLC digital inputs through separate PNP and NPN outputs, with selectable normally open or normally closed logic. It uses a 12–30 V DC supply and an M12 five-pin pigtail. Match the wiring and signal levels to the controller. IO-Link requires the separate CR0/0I-1V variant, which uses a four-pin connection; it is not a software upgrade to this model.

How should teach-in and blanking be used during installation?

Use fine or standard teach-in to set sensitivity after aligning the sensor and reflector in their final positions. Blanking excludes part of the sensing area, allowing a fixed obstruction to be ignored. That also removes detection coverage from the excluded area. After setup, pass the smallest required target through every relevant position and confirm detection at production speed.

Which reflector and accessories are needed for the CR0/0B-1V?

The specified 0.2–4.5 m operating range requires the RL106G reflector. Datasensing lists this reflector and the ST151 fixing kit as supplied accessories. Allow space for mounting on opposite sides of the detection path and access for cleaning and adjustment. Include the required M12 connection cable in the quotation, and confirm package contents when ordering a replacement unit.

Can the CR0/0B-1V be used for personnel protection?

No. The CR0/0B-1V is an object-detection sensor and is unsuitable as the protective device for personnel guarding. Detecting a hand or body during a trial does not demonstrate safety capability. Select an appropriate device from the machine safety range through a machine risk assessment, including the required safety controls and installation distances.

Is the CR0/0B-1V suitable for wet or washdown environments?

Its IP67 rating and −10°C to +55°C operating range support industrial use, subject to Datasensing’s stated operating conditions, including no freezing. IP67 alone does not establish suitability for high-pressure cleaning or aggressive detergents. Assess the aluminium housing, PMMA optical face, cable and connector against the actual cleaning process, and keep optical surfaces clear of deposits.

What information should I provide for a CR0/0B-1V quotation?

Provide the smallest target dimensions, material, possible orientations, required sensing height and sensor-to-reflector distance. Add conveyor speed, minimum product gap, PLC input type, environmental conditions and quantity. Photos or a layout drawing help clarify mounting constraints. If installation adjustments or ongoing maintenance are required, specify the scope alongside Marveltech’s industrial automation services, and request itemised accessories, availability and lead time.
