The Datalogic AV900 is a fixed mount 2D barcode scanner for parcel sorting, conveyor identification, airport baggage handling and static industrial reading. Its 9 MP sensor, acquisition at up to 32 frames per second and configurable focus support automated barcode capture and image recording across variable item sizes and label positions.
The AV900 reads 1D, 2D, stacked and postal codes, including GS1-128, Data Matrix, QR Code, PDF417 and MaxiCode. Within MarvelTech’s range of stationary industrial scanners, it suits applications that need broad image coverage while retaining enough detail to decode the smallest required barcode.
Typical uses include parcel and baggage sorting, carton and tote tracking, dispatch verification and returns processing. Continuous red or white illumination also supports overhead reading at manual presentation and conveyor-loading stations.
The field of view is the area captured in each image. Its usable width depends on the lens, mounting distance and barcode size; a 9 MP sensor alone does not establish the number of cameras needed. Labels on hidden faces require additional reading positions.
The AV900 is offered with 25 mm or 35 mm C-mount optics and integrated red or white illumination. The model suffix identifies the optical and lighting configuration:
| Model | Lens and aperture | Illumination |
|---|---|---|
| AV900-257R | 25 mm, f/7 | Red |
| AV900-257W | 25 mm, f/7 | White |
| AV900-358R | 35 mm, f/8 | Red |
| AV900-358W | 35 mm, f/8 | White |
Focus modes include dynamic, sequential and software-adjustable operation. Select the focus arrangement around the distance from the reader to each label, including any required distance measurement and control accessories. Check illumination against actual labels, particularly coloured print, glossy surfaces and wrapping.
Illustrative configuration: an overhead station handling both flat mailers and tall cartons needs testing at the nearest and farthest label positions. Check the smallest code at the edges of the image as well as the centre before choosing the lens and focus settings.
PackTrack associates decoded barcodes with individual objects moving through the reading zone. This supports sorting applications with reduced gaps, where capturing a valid code and assigning it to the correct parcel are separate requirements.
The achievable gap and conveyor speed depend on the complete installation. Validate item tracking, trigger timing, label visibility and exposure settings with representative loads; the maximum frame rate is an image-acquisition specification, not a parcels-per-second rating.
The AV900 can store captured images onboard and transfer them through Gigabit Ethernet, with formats ranging from full-definition images to compressed JPEG files. These images can support investigation of failed reads, optical character recognition (OCR) and video coding, where an operator reviews an image to recover identification data.
Specify the processing software, image destination and retention period as part of the project. Image capture alone does not define a complete OCR or archive system, and image size, capture frequency and network capacity affect the storage requirement.
The onboard e-GENIUS web interface provides browser-based configuration. X-PRESS setup controls and dual aiming lasers assist alignment, while compatibility with WebSentinel PLUS supports system performance monitoring. Include any monitoring software and its licence requirements in the project scope.
Connections include two Ethernet TCP/IP interfaces and two serial communication interfaces. SyncNet coordinates multiple readers through a master/slave network, allowing a reading station to present a consolidated interface to the host system.
For PLC, warehouse management or sorting-system integration, establish the required protocol, message format, trigger source and response timing. Ethernet connectivity by itself does not establish compatibility with a particular controller or software platform.
The reader requires 24 V DC ±20%, with a specified current consumption of 2 A. Its die-cast aluminium enclosure measures 200 × 126 × 130 mm and weighs 2.9 kg; allow additional space for the mounting arrangement, connectors and cable routing.
The AV900 has an IP65 protection rating, active cooling and an operating range of 0 to 50 °C. Storage temperature is −20 to 70 °C, with humidity specified up to 95% without condensation. Check the installation environment against these limits, including conditions during shutdown and cleaning.
The Datalogic AV500 fixed mount barcode scanner is the closest alternative for logistics reading stations. Both models specify acquisition at up to 32 frames per second and offer PackTrack, configurable focus and red or white illumination; the principal imaging difference is the AV900’s 9 MP sensor versus the AV500’s 5 MP sensor.
Consider the AV900 when the coverage calculation calls for more image detail across the required reading area. The AV500 may be sufficient where its optics resolve every required code throughout the working distance. Compare both against the same label samples, conveyor speed and mounting constraints before selecting a model.
There is no single working range for every AV900 installation. Lens choice, focus mode, barcode dimensions and label position determine usable coverage. Supply the minimum and maximum reader-to-label distances so the proposed configuration can be checked.
It can provide identification within a dimension-weigh-scan system. Dimension measurement and weighing require the corresponding equipment and system integration; they are not established by the barcode reader’s imaging specification.
Specify the reader model, quantity, mounting hardware, power supply, cables and any triggering, distance-measurement or networking equipment. Include image-processing software, monitoring licences, installation and support where required. Ask MarvelTech to confirm availability, lead time, warranty terms and service coverage for the proposed package.
MarvelTech provides automatic-identification solutions and equipment maintenance, periodic inspection, adjustments and support contracts. For an AV900 project, share the operating requirements so the equipment selection and service scope can be agreed.

The AV900 suits automated parcel sorting, airport baggage-tag reading, carton and tote tracking, and overhead presentation stations. It reads 1D, 2D, stacked and postal codes, including GS1-128, Data Matrix, QR Code, PDF417 and MaxiCode. Selection should consider the smallest barcode, its position and the available mounting space; support for a barcode format does not establish readability on every label.
Choose the AV900 when its 9 MP sensor provides useful additional image detail across your required reading area. The Datalogic AV500 has a 5 MP sensor, while both specify acquisition at up to 32 frames per second. Compare coverage at the same minimum barcode size and working distances; higher resolution alone does not establish faster throughput or fewer cameras.
The AV900-257R and AV900-257W use 25 mm f/7 optics; the AV900-358R and AV900-358W use 35 mm f/8 optics. At the same mounting distance, the shorter focal length provides a wider view, while the longer focal length places more image detail on a smaller area. Check the smallest code at both distance extremes and image edges before selecting the lens.
Software-adjustable focus sets the reading distance through configuration. Sequential focus cycles through preset focus positions, while dynamic focus responds to distance information from the installation. For mixed parcel heights, establish whether preset zones cover the label positions or whether distance-driven adjustment is needed. Confirm the compatible measurement device, control connection and timing requirements when specifying dynamic focus.
Choose illumination using representative labels and packaging under the proposed reading conditions. AV900 models ending in R have red illumination; W models have white illumination. Label colours can change barcode contrast under different lighting, while glossy wrapping can create reflections. Test viewing angle and exposure as well as illumination colour, including wrinkled labels and codes beneath film.
No. The specification describes image acquisition, while parcel throughput depends on conveyor speed, item length, spacing and successful decoding during the available viewing time. Exposure must also limit motion blur at the smallest barcode size. Assess performance with representative moving items and the intended image-saving settings, rather than treating frame rate as a parcel-handling capacity.
PackTrack associates decoded barcodes with individual objects moving through the reading zone. This matters when several parcels are visible together: decoding a valid barcode and assigning it to the correct parcel are separate requirements. The usable minimum gap depends on object detection, conveyor tracking, calibration and label positions. Validate assignment accuracy at the proposed spacing before increasing line loading.
SyncNet coordinates multiple readers in a master/slave arrangement, allowing the station to communicate through a consolidated host interface. The AV900 provides two Ethernet TCP/IP interfaces and two serial communication interfaces. Plan reader positions around the label-bearing faces, then define triggering, tracking, message format and response timing. Confirm the required PLC protocol and any gateway requirements as part of integration.
Yes. The AV900 can store captured images onboard and transfer them through Gigabit Ethernet, with formats including full-definition images and compressed JPEG files. These images can support failed-read investigation, optical character recognition and operator review. Specify the processing software, image-to-parcel association and retention policy separately; image capture does not by itself provide a complete text-recognition or searchable archive system.
The onboard e-GENIUS web interface handles browser-based configuration, supported by X-PRESS controls and aiming lasers for setup. WebSentinel PLUS compatibility provides an option for wider system-performance monitoring. Define whether you need individual-reader configuration, operational dashboards or image investigation, and have the quotation identify the corresponding software, licence term and host requirements.
The AV900 requires 24 V DC ±20%, with specified current consumption of 2 A. Allow for its 2.9 kg weight, 200 × 126 × 130 mm housing, connectors and cable routing. It has IP65 protection, active cooling and a 0–50 °C operating range with non-condensing humidity. Assess cold areas and cleaning conditions separately; IP65 does not establish suitability for immersion or high-pressure washdown.
