Overview / Analysis
Softprint Group PLC approached Marveltech with one simple task – to help them eliminate any potential missprinting issues occurring on their Jagenberg Diana Pro 94 high-performance folder-gluer machine. The challenge was to come-up with a solution that would be able to scan each of the pharmaceutical labels that are being processed, while in motion, detect any errors in real time and alert the technical staff. Additionally, the solution needed to be compatible with some of Softprint Group’s previous-generation machines, adding another layer of complexity to the challenge.
Our Solution
The technical team at Marveltech decided to implement the Matrix 320 Series 2D imager reader camera. With its high performing LiquidLens, smart illuminators, and a 2MP sensor, the camera is able to scan barcodes while they are moving at the high speed of 400 meters per minute (6,7m/second) and instantly detect any errors by accessing the product database – all done in real time, and on-site. If any errors are detected, they are instantly recorded, and technicians are promptly notified. Thanks to its user-friendly mounting features, the Matrix 320 Series 2D camera was installed to the production line, together with the laser sensor Datalogic S8 and the handheld scanner Datalogic PowerScan PD9630, connected with RS232 to transmit the required HMP commands.
The technical team at Marveltech conducted a series of test scenarios and managed to successfully set-up the system.
The Result
With the installation of the Matrix 320 Series 2D imager reader camera, the chance of any misprinted packages being sent out into distribution was significantly reduced. The need for on-site operator staff was virtually eliminated, as the entire scanning process is fully automated by the equipment. Any detected barcode errors are automatically recorded and uploaded to FTP for further analysis.
The solution was easy to implement, cost-effective, and fully integrated with the production machine controls, allowing the production process to be stopped and resumed at any time. And the solution was able to be adapted on Softprint Group’s both new and older generation machinery, expanding the scanning process to their entire production line.
Additionally, the Marveltech technical team installed an airflow system in order to prevent any macro dust particles from obstructing the camera’s sensors and disrupting the scanning process. This extra measure ensured reliable, hazard-free results, protecting the setup from environmental factors at the production line.
